  • Wanted Classics v replica

This subject might raise a few eye brows but my intention is to obtain opinion and not upset anyone.

I have been looking recently at purchasing a new cue to play with rather than as a collectors item. I had mentioned that in a perfect world I would love to find a lovely 2nd edition Burwat Champion, Parris, Hunt & O'Byrne or Ye Old Ash.

I kept noticing replica cues of old classics on ebay or various other advertising sites and when I requested the asking price, I was shocked to find out that the replicas were up for sale for more than an original mint condition classic?????

Now don't get me wrong, I have seen some stunning replicas that look incredible. However, there is no replicating that response from a matured Ye Old Ash with that stunning looking shaft. I just can't get my head around Selling a replica for far more than a mint condition collectors piece? It's like banksy or Damien Hirst whipping up a Mona Lisa copy and demanding more than the original by Leonardo Da Vinci hanging in the louvre!

Maybe I just need to take the plunge and try one?

    Thoughts?

    Kind regards

    Chris

Yeah but for which cue ???
Original Ye Olde Ash you are looking at possibly £500 up to £2000

The examples I have seen are Burwat champion copies. I also looked at the possibility of ordering a replica Ye Old Ash from someone who I would rather not mention who does make reputable replicas and as quoted a hefty price well over what I would expect to pay for a mint original.

On what basis are you quoting the Ye Old Ash prices on?

          Many thanks

I presume you are talking about Tony Glover ?? he makes the best replica's around, (or maybe Tony Ions ?)
You will be lucky to get any original Ye Olde Ash cue for less than £500, and if it's one of the 1st edition one's with the red ash, you could be looking at £1000 to £2000 according to those in the know

And don't forget many original cues do not play as well as modern replica's

prices are often higher for replicas depends on the cue i have a burwat here that is very good and would be £100 cheaer than a glover cue. but with ye olde ash etc the prices are now super silly!

I haven't spoken with Tony Glover but looking at the examples I have seen so far his work looks incredible. The whole point of the thread was as a buyer looking for a new cue, where do you draw the line between the two? Lets not forget that we arent talking about chump change here. The money aspect is substantial! Now with for example an original, the depreciation probably isn't going to be an issue but with a replica would I be losing money if I couldn't get on with the cue?

I'm a little fed up of buying cues then losing a shed load due to ebay fees or just lack of interest.

I want to find the right cue but also need to be realistic in case I don't get on with it.

                Many thanks

most quality cues old and new hold their value very well, in the end remember a cue is a cue and it is a fact that 90% of replicas will be better than originals.

Best thing then is to buy 2nd hand, let someone else take the initial hit

for what it is worth, i feel a well made replica cue is better, some off the ones ive had over the years by trevor white and glover where outstanding, ive had a mannock by trevor which to this day is the best made cue ive ever seen...sold it to Nick Kenny and still regret getting rid of it...
