Exotic wood Spalted Tamarind squares blanks. Botanically known as Tamarindus Indica. Awesome figure, pale yellow color, air dried and fully waxed, easy to turn. Highly favored for fine inlay work, custom high-end pool cues, bowl blanks, brush backs, knife handles, musical instruments, pistol grips, decorative and figured veneers, bowls, jewelry boxes, and other expensive specialty items.
Spalted Tamarind is a beautiful wood from India. While primarily cultivated for its fruit, Tamarind is a dense wood. . Much comes from logs that were either found on the forest floor or were cut and then allowed to spalt in the damp and warm jungle conditions. The colors and various line patterns are truly unique from one piece to another. The patterns are created as a result of insects, so you will find insect holes in any spalted wood. Wide boards are rare, despite the trunk dimensions of old trees, since they tend to become hollow-centered. The sapwood offers a beautiful platinum tone accented with dark streaks or ribbons of ashy gray marking, a pale-yellow. The heartwood is rather small, dark purplish-brown, very hard, heavy, strong, durable and insect-resistant. It bends well and takes a good polish. It is highly prized for furniture, paneling, and musical instruments. It has at times been sold as "Madeira mahogany". Tonal characteristics approach that of Indian Rosewood. Use a good dust mask with any type of spalted wood when you work on it.
