Cleaning table iron

One of the old boys took a tumble with the iron the other night, landing it clean on the felt floor tiles.

He's alright but the iron is in a bit of a state with melted plastic over half of the polished surface.

Has anyone hs success getting this off without using something like a brillo pad on it? I suspect it's polished for a reason and would like to keep it like that.

I don't know but would imagine some sort of organic solvent is possibly the way to go.
