  • Aluminium Cases

Ok I am trying to decide on which case to buy for my cue. If posible i am trying to stay at or below the 60 pound mark. I have been looking at a number of different places, The cue craft aluminium cases are around 60 pound (my friend has one so i know they are good), craftsman have an aluminium case for 35 plus postage. Or theres a number around on ebay. The main question i would like to know, does anyone know what quality the cases are that come with the joshua xavier or silent knight cues? The cheap chinese type ones? To be honest im intrigued to see firsthand what the chinese cues are like, and the cases look ok. Im thinking if i can get one for around 20 to 30 pounds, then its basically buy a case and get a cue free.
The cue would be given to my dad for his barbilliards table, so that would find a home too. I'm not intending to bash anyone over the head with it or anything and i take good care of my things, so i'm thinking the cases will probably be ok.

    Heres the sorts of things i was thinking of;
Craftsman; Either the leatherette or 35 pound aluminium case

    Or ebay something like this

Or anything else if someone has some suggestions.

Rob, as with most snooker things, the best advice is to buy the best product available. If you buy a cheapo case, you'll get cheapo results! I'd buy the leatherette case, it's hard-wearing and not as flash as the flame case! If you want something functional, prosaic but long-lasting, go for the cue craft case or, if you can find one on eBay, a Barracuda case; they're the best cases ever created!

my brain says craftsman leather one (because its shorter, quite nice looking and cheap), my sensible side says cue craft... but im strangely drawn towards cheapoland... Because i want to see what the jx cues are like, and my dad can have a cue for his barbilliards table. You can play barbilliards with a broom handle quite well lol. (not that it isnt a difficult game, because it is) For the past 2 years i have had one of the really cheap basically cardboard cases that came with my first cue, and i havent even dented that, so i can't see the jx one not being good enough. Just wondering if anyone has actually seen what they are like, if its just thinner metal its fine, if the hinges fall off after a month its not!

Which Craftsman case is it? The leatherette at £85 or the wide one? What exactly are you going to put in the case? Give me details!

Well currently i have just the cue and mini butt. But am intending to buy the extension some time in the future. Then of course a cue towel but that goes in my pocket atm so no biggie there! I was looking at the wide leatherette one for £39. According to craftsman its the 4th best selling item they sell, so people must agree with me. But I'm still drawn to the ebay ones... Considering how many cues you've bought just to see what they were like you cannot deny the urge to try things!!!

No worries there, mate! The wide leatherette is OK, but it's a zip opening which can be a bit of a bother at times, and if it breaks ...! On top of that, the inside has lots of little plastic dividers which don't look too great and have a tendancy to unstick themselves.

I'd recommend looking at B&W Billiards' website, they have two wide aluminium cases, like the extra-long one at £65 at the top of the page. The shorter of the two comes in at £60 and I've seen them, they're good. The aluminium is good quality, as are the end caps (very important!) and, most importantly of all, the hinges are fantastic! If you're looking for a case which will take cue + mini-butt + extension + towel + chalks + chalk holder + tips + the kitchen sink (!) then look no further!

Oh yeh i for got... I love my magnetic chalk holder... A largely pointless thing to have but i wouldnt be without it
I've never bought anything from B&W, partly because I hate the website. Is this the one you meant?

But i'm still tempted by ebay From a look point of view they are identical to the craftsman, and considering the craftsman at £35 is about half the price of the cue craft i don't know how much different the ebay ones will be to the craftsman.

How are you getting on with you rubber band cue? Strangely i've used stiff and quite whippy cues and played equally well (or equally badly) with both. Maybe if i was a better player i would notice more of a difference though!

Rightn website, wrong case! It's the 3 pc case at £60, not the double one, which is so big, you look like you're carrying full military hardware!! The 3 pc one is a little more discreet.

I think that the case on eBay does look the same, but if they are giving it away for free, how good can it be? Go for the quality and get your dad to buy his own cue, or club together with your brother and get him a nice chinese cue + free case to satisfy your curiosity!

About the "rubber band cue", I haven't been able to play all weekend, I had the wee one with me while wife and the 2 oldest ones went off on a jaunt to Paris, and besides, my leg has been giving me serious jip all weekend, so driving was a big no-no. I'll let you know more as and when.

                    This one?

Oh well the ebay one i wanted ended... You don't know how much effort it took to resist buying it for the sake of buying it!
                    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=360133042092
Its so pretty... It would look good on the wall of our shed, even if it is rubbish!

But the quality is expensive, if i bought the craftsman case i could probably afford the extension as well.
I found these yesterday, I've found the same brand of chinese cues from an actual snooker supply place, but for some reason these ones seem to be machine spliced whereas all others are handspliced???

That's the right one this time!

I'm glad you resisted, it's good for the soul!

Honestly, I'd buy the better case just now, as you'll always need to protect your cue from possible accidents and incidents! The extension could wait, no?

What is it with you and Chinese cues and cases, do you not want to "Buy British"?

Only 3 hours left and it stands at just £10.50. (You just put in a sneeky bid and up the final price though )

I'd agree with Keith that the leatherette option is a nice route to consider.

When I got my cue I had the option of an alu or leatherette case and it was no question for me... Not least because I thought it looked a lot classier. The point is that the man on the street isn't going to know too much about your cue but they'll notice (Or at least see) your case... And whilst we *know* we shouldn't judge a book by a cover, it's hard. It was certainly the icing on the cake for me to not only have *my* new cue in *my* new case!

I hadn't quite as liberal a budget as you and therefore I'm sure you could source something excellent, but so far I'm finding the case hardwearing and still stands apart from the "cheap" alu cases that my club sell (They are selling cheap alu case and cue packages for £18 at the moment, so there is a surge in the number of members walking in with alu cases!). My opinion may change as my budget grows (Who knows!) but certainly at this moment in time I wouldn't change my option.

As an aside, I find that fitting a towel in my case may begin to stress the hinge and so I don't bother - I just carry that seperately, or fed through the case handle, as I'd been advised. My case currently holds my cue, mini-butt, extension and chalk. There is also some room that I have padded out at the moment but I intend to get some foam and cut slits in it to hold my Spoony. Beyond this I have a little box with the likes of spare tips, glue, files, etc at home... I'd have to be feeling "confident" to do any sort of maintenance myself anyway, so there is no likelihood I'd need that stuff whilst at the club... I'm sure when the time like that comes I'll be asking somebody for help anyway!!
