  • laminate tips on smal ferrules?

Its time for me to re-tip my pool cue (uk 8ball). I was thinking about using a laminated tip, as i get on really well with the talisman pro soft on my snooker cue. but, I'm worried that at just under 8mm, by the time I've shaped the tip and made it "short" enough, there wont be much in the way of layers left. anyone have any experience of very small laminated tips?

I've tried one, it was a disaster! Too hard, no grip on the cue-ball and impossible to chalk. I was not happy I've asked a couple of cuemakers about this too, and they've all been against it for one reason or another. If you want to, try and see, perhaps you'll be lucky. Fingers crossed!

I've had a hard laminated tip (omin wb) on an 8.5mm before, but the main problem with that was the ammount of shaping required meant that the bottom layer became de-laminated somewhat (from the side/down pressure i assume) during fitting.

i know ADR reccomends using the 11mm talisman tips over the smaller ones, then cutting them down, but if i use an 11mm tip on a ferrule under 8mm, then after i cut it down its going to be really tall... and i'd imaging id have trouble shaping it (unless maybe i cut some height off with a craft knife!?)

I can relate to what you are saying about the tip being too tall and such as it has happened to me.
Now, when I need to trim a tip that small, I cut the tip down to almost half with a blade before I start the installation. I cut it carefully along the lamination and then sand flat the bottom to make sure it is flat. After it is done and trimmed, I still have about 4 layers left which is really all that I need.
If your tip delaminates it may be due to you pulling the layers off when you trim it with a blade upside down, or if you are doing it on a lathe, that you are creating too much heat and torque pulling the layers apart working on the tip for too long. So, cutting the tip first to reduce its thickness should help, and use sharp tools and dont fuss it around too much.
If you are cutting it with a blade, and there are lots of overhanging of the tip, perhpas cut the overhanging parts off bit by bit instead of going at it all at once.
I have installed 14mm Moori S on 9mm tip with no problem so if you are starting with 11mm, that should be fine.

PJ... Good to know... Last night I glued a 14mm Talisman M onto my 9.5mm ferrule. I will take the precautions in cutting as you mentioned... however... the thickness of the laminated tip is 6mm... what do you think the idea depth would be?

            Cheers.

I would leave the height of the tip alone. I have found that the shoulder height has no bearing on the playability of the tip and you will get used to it.

                Noel,
I have to warn you, when I first experimented with a laminated, the experimentation lasted years. When you like them, it’s usually a lasting experience. Some find the medium a bit hard. One of the drawbacks to laminated tips, is they seem to gloss over. I think the trick is to keep the surface rough, via Brad Scuffer or rasp. You will be amazed at it’s longevity. I am out of soft so I will be ordering some from Talisman, we’ll talk. I must say that I find something attractive looking in burnished laminated pigskin on the end of a cue.

You installed the tip last night, that means you must have given it a try tonight. What were your first impressions??

                  Fitted a 14mm Talisman soft to a mate's 9.5mm ferrule.
Trimmed up nicely, no delamination. He does say that it feels softer to play with than the 11mm Talisman... due to the height of the tip.(higher in the larger diameter tips).
From all reports, he likes the way it plays.

It usually takes no more than a couple of hours play, for the tip to firm up. From there on it will play at the same consistency for it's life. Make sure to scuff.

Thanks to barracuda911 for the fitting, he does nice job, a lot go to him for fitting and this was going to be a little different, particularly being layered, my theory was that the talisman at best is a hard tip, i had it in my head as tips wear they get harder, if i was to have a taller tip on then it would tend to be softer, and it was, it appears to have taken longer to play in, but i think its going to be nice, how ever i'm finding that i need to use a courser chalk, and that in turn causes other problems (marking the cue ball big time).
i've never shyed away from experimenting but as the season is almost upon us i will leave it as it is. My advice is to give it a go if it doesn't work the fix is as close by as a knife.

With Moori, I like to leave about 4 layers on, it is the way I like them--it still has lots of life and plays firm. But I guess it is up to you.
