  • Chalk Usage

Only posting this cos someone said the forum had gone a bit dead lately!

Question:- How long do you use a piece of chalk before dumping it?
Some folk might like a new bit every match and some folks might carry on with the same bit till it's falling to pieces with no paper covering it anymore. I've seen Sean Murphy throw his chalk into the crowd after a match.

apart from minor mishap where it got sent flying to the north pole... i tend to try to use mine till the height is around 0.5cm after which it becomes difficult to use and i'll chuck it away...

I usually use a piece until the yellow covering on the sides comes off as or wears away as i find when it does this i tend to get chalk on my hands which ends up staining the cue and i hate it when that happens!

Also when i use a leather chalk pouch i find the covering wears down quicker so i go through chalk faster than usual.

        Probably me being too fussy!

I dont mind using chalk until its well worn down, but i have a naughty habit of swopping it with a better one if people leave them behind

I use it until i start to get chalk all over my fingers, so when the paper cover starts to come off basically. IBy the time i chuck them away tey do have pretty paterns in though.

I'm pretty picky about my chalk as I don't like it touching the ferrule. I always end up with a 4-pointed 'star' on mine and when that gets to a point where I see some black inside I file the chalk down to where it's not touching the ferrule anymore.

I keep a bucket of used chalk near my table and replace the chalk with another one that's been filed down and toss the older one in another bucket to wait to be filed down.

I only get a couple of weeks from the initial go and then another couple of weeks after filing down, with about 3 repeats or until the paper sides come off and then I chuck it as I hate getting the chalk on my fingers and cue.

I use it till it no longer matches the shape of my tip. I'm not very keen on new pieces, being virtually flat, because it takes more effort to chalk the entire tip.

I used to use it til it was nearly worn away. I chalk the tip with all parts of the chalk, not just in the centre, so it wears fairly evenly, or as even as it can be.

Not played snooker for 36 years, until the last week this May, except for a game I had in Chinal in 1997. The chalk I am using has been in my cue case ever since then, so it is probably 40 years old and is not made by the Makers of todays chalk - Tweeten. It is made by Kleckhefer, Chigago, Illnois.

After joining TSF and reading about everything that is going on in here, I decided to try and play again.

My god, it is hard work. I knew that I would not be very good, but thought I would play a little better than I can. It is a lot harder than I ever expected to be.

Have ordered from Trevor White and am now in the process of a long wait, just hoping that one day he may mail me to say it is ready sooner that he thought it would be. Also ordered a case from Crispin Jones.

I am now in my 79th year, so maybe some of the older ones know how hard it can be to play after such a long lay off. Cannot even get my leg up on the table to take a shot when stretching - lol. But will keep trying.

I did use a Ye Olde Ash when I stopped playing and somebody came round to see if I would sell it, so thought have no need for it anymore, and sold it.

Now am using cues out of the racks and they are not very good, so cannot wait til Trev does the business!

Ok. im one of those people who actually use my chalk down, and keep using it until it goes all the way down. i sometimes use a coin to scrape my chalk back into shape however, after i let people borrow my chalk, and they dig a hole in the middle. i dont like it when they do that.

the first is brand new chalk, second is a month old piece i use every now n again, and the last piece is about 3 months old. ive used that one heaps, as you can see its running out so i put it in my chalk holder! =]

I HATE using a new cube of chalk, so I like to use my chalk until it's more or less unusable. This is the most I've got out of a cube, I could of carried on but it was just getting silly.
