Yes, get the rough shape, give a few good hard taps with a spare ball, then give it it's final shape, take a bit of bedding in.
No one is listening until you make a mistake!

Often wondered if anyone had tried any of the pool barom tips and if they played well, they always looked a bit 'unfinished' one sides like they need burnishing?? Anyone else tried these

do you mean the pressed ones?
I have tried a few on my pool cue (8.2mm ferrule)
Pool Baron Calf Hide Soft - very good, takes the chalk well, responsive feel on the cue ball; very very soft needs attention often to maintain shape. Any miscue and likely to have need of reshaping. Use very fine paper only, else you will wear away the tip befoe you know it.
Pool Baron Calf Hide Medium - as above but obviously is not as susceptible to mis-shaping. Still very soft compared to most other tips (even ones regarded as soft). I had one on for many months, may go back to one after the current tip runs its course.
        cheers
