Although this thread is discussing about talisman brand, I hope someone can tell me what is wrong with the elkmaster tip just for once only?

The story goes like this: My friend bought 2 elkmaster tips 2 weeks ago but he still not using them yet. In time, one of them is now "growing" up from 9.25mm to 9.50mm. The other one still remain the same size.

    Questions are:-
    1) Since this is the first case that happened to his virgin elkmaster tip, is this "growing" tip just a NORMAL thing to happen?; or
    2) This "growing itself" tip is now become useless (which mean ready to be dumped)?

Need some tip experts advise here.

p/s-my friend is now planning to buy Talisman Soft Pro tips now. How good are they? Give some comments here folks.

    Thanks.
    I would guess :
    1. 'tip surface growing' comes from moisture building up on the surface.
    2. Elk is good, but lacks of consistency. I bought a box of 25 and could use only some 10 good ones. Try re-pressing it and it will last longer.
    3. willytan has a good stock of Omin Tan layered tips. as good as Talisman.
    Hope this helps.
    It's in the Shaft

i would guess the fibres are seperating - you need a bit of skill when you pick which tip to use from the box.

          • Played my first session with my new talisman tip which i order from ADR147, after it took my dad about an hour to cut it to size and shape up to how i wanted it. It was well worth it, as the very first frame i made a 50 break followed by 3 more and a string of 40's this was amazing with a new tip. Granted im not saying i wouldn't of made these breaks with a Elk or BD, but i can almost say i wouldn't with a brand new one the soft screw and stun shots felt amazing. my practice partner commented after hiting a couple of balls that it felt like it had been on for years. I can honestly say i will not be using anything else.

You should try Mike Wooldridge Super Laminated tip as well. I just bought from him and it feel superb as well. I might say it has a better feeling compare to Talisman Soft Pro tip. But Talisman is a very good tip, too. So, it is your choice.

                • Have anyone of you here ever try to shape your cue tip using the finest grade of sand paper for metal?

Never for me. I use medium metal sandpaper.

My dad uses all sorts of different stuff which i think most cuemakers would proberbly not approve of but he's an engineer and a perfectionist so always gets the tip spot on for me

                        • This is my first post in this forum and I'm glad to see that its post #147, lucky me haha.

In Bahrain we don't get many snooker products as you know snooker market here is a hundred times smaller than the UK, so what ever we get is what people use the most.

My speculations about Elk master tips is the same as many members stated, they die quickly and one tip gives amazing feel and gives me full confidence that I can follow through my cue all the way, the tip after gives a dull feeling.

Now that it is so obvious Talisman and Mike Wooldridge tips are better, can anyone recommend a sufficient site I may use to order both type of tips and ship them over to here? Also I came across a website called Greenbaize, it was mentioned that Talisman Tips are used by Ronnie and Higgins, is that info correct? How about other professionals, what is the most commonly used tip?
It's not the pace of life that concerns me... It's whether I make a 147 break before it ends!

                            • Ok, here's one! Tony's site said that a main reason for de-laminating is that the tip was too tall. The general height should apparently be 1/3rd that of the width of the ferrule. Apparently the height creates too much stress on the bond between layers when playing with side etc.. My question is this though- what about slicing the tip in half, height wise? That way, it won't be too thick, and I may be able to use it as 2. Any comments/suggestions?

How do you know Talisman and MW tips are better if you never use them before? There is a cheaper laminated tip also made in Thailand, which has the same quality as Talisman. It is called Tan laminated tip. I made my order through Unclevit this month together with my new cue.

For MW tips, go to www.handmadecues.com shopping site. Register yourself as a member there. Simple. It took 2 weeks for me to wait MW tips arrived to my place before.

I think adr147 can supply you some best Talisman tips if you buy through him. He is still on vacation now but you can e-mail/PM him first.

                                Hope this helps.
