I am interested to know what the hardness of the Talisman S (Snooker) is compared to Elkmasters?

I have used Elks for the past 16 years. I test my Elks by the fingernail test, and the Elks usually have a little give when tested in this fashion, some more than others of course, but only the hardest of elks have almost no give in the sidewall of the tip when tested like this. I favour a tip with very little give in the sidewall as I play with a flatter domed tip, as this is my preference and so for me the harder tips retain their shape better over a longer period.

I am eager to try out a Talisman which Maverick is so kindly bringing in for me, if I find it to my liking I will buy a couple of boxes myself.
I think it's a scandal. We have to reach behind the seats and share an ice bucket so, whoever is listening, I would like my own ice bucket. We used to have our own bucket. I don't know what's happening - are we scrimping on ice now?

each tip is different but i would say on average they are a bit firmer but its a totally different thing they are not really comparable.

I think a elk master tip is as good as any other tip available.

I have just switched to using a Talisman soft after trying BD, Elks for years and then MW supertips. I agree with the sentiments they take less time t obed in, and once you get over the initial different sound the tip makes to start with they are superb, very consistant, and hold chalk superbly resulting in very few if any miscues ( famous last words) they are extermely reactive in my opinion and will last longer in my opinion if treated with care. But again it's horses for courses and they may not be for everyone.

I would give them a real go if I could get them to 10mm. They come at 11mm minimum, and that's a bit bigger than I like and, if cut down to being level with the ferrule, too small.
Is there any way to accurately cut tips (some kind of press?) to certain sizes?
The idea of a firmer tip, and greater consistency is very appealing to me, but I'd need the right size.
I hope there's a way, as I've yet to hear anything bad about them.

11mm cut down very well indeed even as small as 8mm as i have on my pool cue - tony offered to supply them in 10mm but none of the people i supply them too had any interest - if its not broke don't fix it!

                    Thanks archalf1471 and ADR147.

It was just cutting them accurately really, the ferrule of my cue is between 9 and 9.5 mm, but I like a 10mm tip with the overhang. I've tried both ways (cut down to level, and left alone) and prefer 10mm. Playing with a smaller tip would be murder for me, I don't play enough to be consistent, never mind after starting to change things!

I'll get 10mm soft Pro tips at some point then, thanks a lot for the help.

you can put something on the ferrule to aid cutting oversized tips. have you read the tip guide?

Hi guys, being an old elkie fan myself, i would always start with a fresh box of 50x10mm elkies, & go through them to find 20 or so of the hardest ones, using the method stated earlier. ( nail pressing the sides )
(9mm elkies don't need to be treated in this way because they are lower/narrower)

Then i would fit them in the usual way , but not trim down to size, bed each tip by holding the cue upright & butt on the floor, then striking down on the top of the tip using the cueball only, in a manner to reproduce a full range of contact with the tip turning the cue constantly, then pot a few balls to make sure they feel consistent in general use, then remove the tip & repeat this task for all the selected tips.
(donate what is left in the box to a pool player in your local club)

Using this method you will always have a tip "broken in" at a cost of just a couple of minutes practice time per tip.

I have used this method for 10 years +, simply to enable me to be able to swap tips, even in mid session/season, without the nagging feeling you would get in your brain if you had just picked one up out of the box.

now i use talisman tips! no breaking in! no hasstle! no problem!

fit it , play with it..... your first shot will be the same as the last , no bullspit!

A word of warning though, they do suit my game, that is not to say that they will suit yours, i prefer a slightly harder tip, even the pro soft are a bit harder than an elkie,
but try one you might just be in for a suprise.

the difficult thing for people who have never tried them is that they make a different sound.

                            I kind of agree,
but worse still , some other lam tips on the market can also feel spring like!

so not really a problem with what i can only call the clack sound?

my hearing is not so great!
                            don't miss!
