  • Rosetta iron

    Hi.
I am looking to buy a snooker iron for my table. Everyone seems to recommend Dowsing. However, I have just found an iron made by Rosetta. I have never heard of this brand. Is it any good? Any input welcome.
    Thanks

I haven't heard of this make before, do you have a link or any details of price?

The reason Dowsing irons are always talked of is because they have until recently been the only manufacturer of snooker table irons but IMO they aren't as well made as in previous years and I think they are very expensive for what they are. My club has been through about 5 irons in the last 4 years, the heating elements always seem to fail on them and replacing that part is also an expensive repair job. I'd welcome any alternative to dowsing as competition always helps us the customer.

Looks pretty decent to me and comes with a 1 year guarantee which is the same as Dowsing offer. At around £80 cheaper I don't see this as much of a gamble and in all honesty if I were looking to buy an iron I think I'd be tempted at this.

Chinese clone. As Geoff has previously pointed out the cheap import irons can suffer from sole plate deformation. I have never had any bother in 25 yrs using Dowsings. Yes the element may burn out if left on for too long. Seen this many times.

What do you mean by sole plate deformation?

Even if a clone, it should still do ths job shouldn't it?

The sole plate can twist due the the heating and cooling of the iron. If the iron is not flat it won't iron table properly. This is a fault found on the cheaper irons. It can also occur on Dowsings if they are left face down on the stand. You should always stand the iron on its end.

Thanks for the info. It has a 12 month warranty on it so you would assume that any deformation should probably show up before it is out of warranty, and i can therefore get a replacement. Besides, i am using it for my own personal table so it won't be a heavily used iron - not like in a club i mean.

Anyone got an up to date view on Rosetta irons based on experience?

I went through this whole debacle on Irons a while ago! For me to buy a proper Dowsing Iron it is over $500 Australian Dollars plus postage which is outrageous.......

No way was i paying this and what i did was found a household Phillips Iron that is a " DRY " Iron with no steam holes and you cannot put water into it. I experimented first with old cloth before it got to the table and the " Wool " setting on it is very good. O.k it does not have the weight of a Dowsing iron but gee it does the job when used in the same way on my Strachan 6811 as it comes up a treat after a couple of runs down the nap. I have been using this for years with no problems and just double check the temp and be sure to not have it to hot.

Also the Iron cost me $30 and is still going strong after 18 Months!! Dry Irons are hard to find now though i must say and not many makers still produce them as Steam is the preffered home method.
If it is called " Common sense " why is it so rare???

Only got a 3/4 size table that doesnt get used much, so over £200 for an iron is a bit sore, watvhing a 2nd hand one on eBay, £150 to buy, which is about double taken what I would want to pay. If cant get one at a reasonable price will try and fond a dry iron and give that a go, appreciate the input, thanks
