  • Snooker Table Iron in Canada

I want to buy a Table Iron but we cannot buy them in Canada. We have to buy out of the country and the voltage is different. Has had anyone had any experience with changing them over or do we just have to put a new plug on.

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
    I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

I have a BCE iron which is supposed to use 240VAC which came with a British 3-prong plug. I discovered the plug we use here for a computer monitor fits the iron perfect and I just plug mine into the wall using the North American edition of the 3-prong plug.

Since we are 120VAC over here the iron takes a little longer to heat up than it would on 240VAC although there would also be the option of hooking it up to 240VAC in the house since we use that on electric stoves, furnaces and air conditioners so it's a matter of wiring up 240 somewhere convenient.

Why not just use a ordinary iron that has a wool setting on it that's all I use .

That's what I use now. I was up to Terry's last Friday and he was ironing his table with a proper table Iron. I could not believe the different compared to me using my house hold iron. I just had to have one.

a 240 volt iron run on 120 volt circuit will only heat up 1/3 as much. Intuition leads you to believe it'll be half as hot but it's more like water hoses/pipes. Halving the diameter cuts the flow by 1/4.. different math but similar relationship. If you want to run a 240v iron tap into 2 separate 120v lines to make a 240 and just go to Home Depot (or other) and buy the correct plug. Best to consult an electritian if you're not comfortable.

I talked to my electrician he told me the only thing that will change is it will take longer to heat up. Which is exactly what happens. I have it on the highest setting and it heats up and the red light goes out which means it is hitting its temperature. So i did not change the power over.

I guess I can now say (with satisfaction)...Les, I TOLD YOU SO.

Unfair I guess since Les needs to see for himself. I've been using a BCE 240VAC iron for years plugged into 120VAC using a cord from a computer monitor and it has worked perfectly. I just have to remember to nip down early and plug it in as it takes a while to heat up.

Yes I do the same. i plug it in then brush and block the table and by that time my Iron is ready to go. I forgot to tell you Terry that I am in the middle of designing a heater for my table.

                      Les:

I have 4 heater tubes here that I'm not using. I forget what I paid for them but I can sell them at cost if you want.

They are called 'Damp Chasers' I believe
