  • Relining a case - Weekend Project

I do love a little project, trying something new and learning a few new skills and techniques. This weekend I decided to crack on with a case that I wanted to change the lining on.

The case is a leather 3/4 case made by Martin Jones that I bought directly from him through the forum and there is a thread here about the lovely case. As mentioned in that thread I was not in love with the interior and to Martin's credit he offered to re-line the case for me but I just fancied a little tinker myself.

So here it was before this weekend

After a few frames with my two lads on Saturday afternoon we had a little trawl around a few DIY/hardware stores and a fabric retailer to collect a few bits and pieces to re-line the case.

Stripping the inside of the case was fun and was a great insight in to the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the very good casemaker that Martin is. There was some trepidation on my part but the worst that could happen would be for me to send the case back to Martin for a professional to carry out what I couldn't.

So with an extra pair of hands or two, well as much as a 9 & 7 year old's attention span allows, we completed the work on the case this afternoon just in time for a Sunday roast and here it is.

Overall I am pleased to have finished it and it certainly holds the cue and extensions snugly. There are areas that I would have liked to have come out better but I have learned the lessons ready for next time and should it really bother me I will just re-do it another time.

My lads have been dropping hints about having cases made for them now! Well I am off to clean the mess up

Looks a good job Stu, I'm sure you're pretty pleased with the outcome, also have to say i like the style of the case, a bit different to the more common round edges!

Thanks mate, I really think those ends are a very nice touch and makes Martin's cases unique.

Errrrm that is a good question Stevie probably far longer than it should have done!! Started at 4:30pm yesterday and finished it at about 3:00pm today and had a good night's sleep and meals inbetween so about 12hrs. I spent a fair bit of time playing around and trying to find 'good' ways of doing things as well as dusting off my sewing machine skills. To do this again I could probably get it done in 4-6 hrs.

Ha ha Stevie, thanks for the confidence but I am some way off being happy with my ability. Maybe after a few more or have a go yourself

very impressive stuart, and 12 hrs is only going to improve
i find that the inside of cases can take just as long as the case itself, sometimes longer, i wish people knew just how many hours go in to making cases !

Thanks Crispian, it was certainly eye opening! There were over 30 pieces to measure, cut, shape, cover, caress, and swear at but I totally loved the challenge.
