  • Which tip? Soft, Medium, or Hard? and why?

Wondering which tip you prefer? Hard, medium or soft.
Please mention why you prefer the tip you play with today.
You may used soft initially, but then considered a medium or hard, and felt that it was better for your game.
What was it that made you played better with another tip.
    Regards/Ronnie

Used to use talisman soft but even then I found them hard and weren't for me. I found different tips work differently with differently cue characteristics, but eventually stuck with hard elks and kept with them and liked them the most

I'm using ADR 147 super softs on my pool cue and soft's on my snooker cue.

I prefer the feeling and feedback of the soft over the super soft for snooker and the super soft is the best tip i've ever used for pool.

Every other brand of laminated tip i've tried has been like putting a rock on the end of the cue, they dampened the feeling and feedback when striking. I also had issues with them retaining chalk and getting harder the more they were used, neither of which has been an issue with the adr's.

I moved over to laminated tips because they are far less faff then pressed and are ready to play from the second you've finished shaping them.

      Hope that helps.

Thanks for your answers. Just bought 5 OMIN Red Leather Laminated Snooker tips on ebay
i believe these are pretty hard so that will be a new experience.

For the moment i play with Elk (when I play snooker) don't know what to expect when i play with the Omin tip.
some say they have a better felling for how the ball is going to behave around the table.
I'm sure it's going to make some more noise, we see ( or hear i should say)

The O Min reds are the hardest tip I've ever tried.

Ok at first but the constant roughing up was annoying, they hold their shape well though.

I started off with elks but found them too inconsistent. Tried a few different pressed tips but couldn't find any I fancy.

Moved on to laminated tips... immediately liked the way they hold their shape and the fact that they are quite ready for play once you fitted them on. No bedding-in period, instant gratification. Again, tried a couple of brands of varying hardness. Currently have a medium ADR tip on. So far so good. Don't see it coming off anytime soon.

I find those 10mm Omin reds very hard indeed. I couldn't get on with them. But if I recall correctly, they had a slightly larger 11mm version. I quite liked that. Not sure if they're still on the market though.

The reason for the changes was mainly due to how the hit felt. That soft/spongy feel of some tips is just plain wrong for me. However, too hard and it feels deadish, more prone to miscue. I guess it boils down to personal preference. If you like it, then it's the right one.

Is there a different in the 10 or 11mm? I ordered the 11mm
But it is the same brand. I still have to take some material of because my tip is 9.8 mm
I only paid 7£ inkl shipping from China so its not the end of the world if they are no good.

I agree with you that elk tip can be a bit sponge, specially in the beginning. But in time when the tip just feels perfect, you have to change it because there is almost no material left
