Need some advice on what tips to buy and what cases too?

Firstly, tips, reading around I quite fancy the BDP tips, but are these considered hard or soft?

Are there better options available?

What is the general consensus on matching tip hardness to shaft stiffness?

Also, what are the Halo aluminium cases like, better than the Cue Craft ones?

Tips are really a personal preference thing, BDP are quite firm and will suit the majority of players. If your confident tipping yourself ask Andrew for a mixed bag to try out different tips, worth the initial £10 or so layout in my opinion. Some tips will feel right but not sound right and vice versa, just trial and error until you find one that suits you.
If I was going to recommend a single tip it would be ADR medium in tan, hard to find fault with, often sounds like we're blowing smoke up Andy 's chuff hole, but they really are the nest tips out there at the moment.
As for cases, looks wise halo, cue protection cue craft, not a lot between the 2.

So if the cue I choose has a stiff shaft should I avoid hard tips?

It really comes down to personal preference. I was always used to use Blue diamonds....so the BDP's are right on the money. I generally press them, and use them on my medium-stiff shafts. I'm used to them, and have absolutely no problem with this combination.

I don't think about it...i never seem to worry about my tip, or have to give it a lot of maintenance....just a minor shape and press every now again, and keep it chalked. I leave plenty on it, and they seem to play for a long time. I see other people bashing the ends of their cue with a cue ball (literally!), and constantly changing their thinned tips because they only play well for a couple of weeks. I'm someone who is pretty fussy and OCD about stuff, so it's a joy to not have this particular aspect of cue disease.

I press my BDP's (yes, a box of 10mm's from ADR) in a tip press, sand the backs, fit them, trim them carefully so that I don't pull them apart (and undo all the good work of the press), and play trouble free for ages. I've got about 12 cues from 9.2mm to 9.8mm all tipped this way, and all play pretty consistently.

Try it, it might suit you.....and it's about as cheap as a decent tipping regime comes.

I've been looking at the tip press gadgets, are they a necessity? How do you know what tips should be pressed etc..?

Because of the way I use them (leaving the tip pretty high) the tip press definitely helps. It reduces the bedding in time. I don't have massive experience, I just came from BD's to these. I'm not saying that there aren't better tips, just that these do the job for me.

All personal preference but i only use mike wooldridge super tips imo there the best tips you can buy period. Dont mind using the omin reds or the master cue blacks and the phoenix blacks all good tips and not to hard.

MW tips are too inconsistent at the moment by his own admission, the originals were the best pressed tips by a country mile, hopefully he'll have it figured out soon.

I love the original Supertips too, the new one's are so bad Stu wouldn't even sell me one !!
Now using BD's seem ok but in my head in know i want them back boo hoo

Case wise, Stu ( greenbaize ) also has nice Halo style cases which he says are as good if not

better than the halos.
