I think a lot of it will depend on the throw of your cue as well. Its not a case of certain types throw more, its a combination of the cue and tip.
I found laminated tips with a stiff cue will throw more than a softer elk. On the other hand a medium flex cue might be okay with a hard laminated tip.
I personally went back to elks after trying many different tips, mainly because of the feel and throw.
