It might be the lacquer but if it is I'd personally just change them for a new set as not too expensive. I can understand being a bit cheesed off if it does it after 18 months but it seems like the easiest solution.

      Some interesting points Crispian.

I think you meant they are not perfect (unless I have read that wrong).

I had a look at some of your older catches and they do look a better quality than some of the Chaney catches I have bought as spares recently......I wonder why the change?

Not much it seems is made to last now, the throw away world encourages us to just buy another. And we don't complain too intensely as the "retail therapy" feels good! : )

Changing locks to Cheneys is the best idea as long as they fit nice and the case doesn't end up looking like ya grandads home made tool box! Lol.

The Cheney case latches on the market today are electro brassed, so just a cheep alloy with brass paint affect, unfortunately they do disscolour after time and need replacing

If you were making cases now Crispian, is there another catch you would fit into the future that seemed high class?

No mate, I investigated latches for years and there is nothing available really To get some made in China you are talking quantities of 5,000 pcs and when I only made 1 case a week it was never an option !
Besides the 5,000 pcs could end up poor ???

Unfortunately it becomes a no brainer.

The Chaney latches seem to be the best fit for the problem and at least there are replacements generally available in this country.

I've certainly had an exhausting look out there and I can't see anything similar and if you can't find an alternative then I guess that's case closed...........sorry, couldn't resist that one!

Tried searching on Google and struggled to find catches. Lots of piano hinges.

Do you have a photograph or website link?

if there were solid latches available then maybe people would use them, but if latches were riveted to a case and something went wrong then customers would need to go out buy bubble wrap, then book couriers for returning a case, followed by a day sitting at home waiting for the couriers, followed by another day needed waiting on the case getting returned
The quality of Cheney latches are not what people think, basically they are very very poor but can be changed in a matter of 5 minutes by someone with very little knowledge so probably still the best option !

It clearly sounds like the best solution Crispian so can totally see why to stay with it until something else comes along (but why would it!).

As Neil says, he's an idiot and he managed to change his so I certainly wouldn't disagree with an idiot, who knows what he might do! (just kidding Neil.......put the shotgun back in the box!).
