Tip keeps flying off

I'm using diamond plus tips. Initially i used liquid super glue which i know is bad but it was the only thing i had.

I got some loctite gel super glue and used the tip for alittle and today it flew off again.

Is this just happening to me or anyone else? I never had this issue before with any tip but suddenly i keep having it with these tips and I've been fitting tips for quite a while.

Gutted as i got one in the box which was outstanding.

Never had a problem regardless of tips I have fitted. It is generally down to technique. Do a search on this forum or use YouTube. Tips coming off are normally down to lack of preparation. Make sure all glue from the previous tip is removed from the top of the cue after removing the previous tip and check that the top of the ferrule is flat prior to retipping.

I've fitted hundreds if tips with loctite super glue (non gel), the only real difference is the time to takes to go off and the gel is easy to re-position the tip.

That aside, it is sound and bonds superbly, I have never had one come off with this when the surfaces are sound.

The base of the tip should be roughed (figure of eight on sandpaper) to ensure there is a decent porous surface to key to and any branding stamps are removed ensuring a flat tip surface..

I always smear both surfaces even though most methods say just one surface; I normally use the side of a match to ensure I have the right amount on the surfaces rather than too much, it also helps to ensure all of the surfaces are covered.

Obviously need to remove every piece of the old glue carefully and the surface of the cue/ferrule needs to be completely level; check to ensure the ferrule isn't loose as this can force the tip off.

The biggest mistake I find watching people fit tips is they don't compress the tip hard enough against the cue when the glue is bonding and ten minutes later the tip is off.

I tend to turn the cue upside down and hold the tip against a flat surface for a minute so I am satisfied it has bonded (gotta be careful as the tip touches the floor as you can move it).

If a tip continually came off a ferrule and I wasn't sure why, you could fit another tip to the cue and see if that is ok. If it is then there's an issue with bonding the others or the method used to fit the tips.

Make sure all glue is removed from tip area and you are down to the wood , surplus glue may still be there making a shiny surface ! Make sure once you have sanded bottom of tip you dont touch it with dirty hands or get any surplus chalk on the glue side, Squirt out a very small amount of glue from tube (If you have already used it) and wipe it away before you use it in other words start afresh each time. DONT RUSH ! allow yourself plenty of time.

Can only be an issue with the ferrule not being level .

I'd back up what Neil has just said. It's likely an issue of your ferrule not being flat or you're not scraping off the layers of old glue and creating a good bonding surface.

Lightly sand bottom of tip too to create a good key for glue to stick to.

His ferrule may be loose. Plus I prefer to use epoxy resin. Much better bond and worth the wait. Mix the two components together every minute or so until about 10 minutes just before the paste starts to go white and stringy. Once centred, tap with a tablespoon and let it set. Job done!

Loctite gel control is the way for me at least! Make sure all the remaining old glue and tip are gone before fitting a new tip. Also the top of the ferrule needs to be level. If not, its only a matter of time before a tip becomes a projectile! Or at least will not meet the standard of good retipmanship, lol. To get the ferrule level and as a matter of fact the whole process correct, take a look at mike wooldridge's site. He has a good tutorial on how to retip properly.

I use gel and I put some on both surfaces and leave to dry. Then I put a little gel on one surface spread evenly and position the tip carefully and when I'm sure it is in the correct position I press it downwards for at least a minute on a hard surface. I have not had a tip fly off in six years of doing it this way.
