What Tip Do You Use?

It just baffles me how RO gets so much chalk onto the tip, i have tried everything, even roughing up the top and side and chalking very often but it always goes hard again?

I have some new tips being made at the minute if anyone wants a sample let me know.

Only post to UK for now im afraid, and i only have a few samples left....

what kind of chalk are you using?

may be better to try a "grainier" chalk...?

when using a tip that doesnt hold green triangle too well, i tend to ignore that it doesnt look full of chalk, cos it has some on there. dont miscue any more than with a "run of the mill" tip..(very rarely)

I use traingle chalk, the light stuff, i never mis-cue when i use the single layered tips, just when i put deep screw on the ball or top-spin i mis-cue every now and again from lack of chalk.

I will try and use a file to keep the tip rough-ish

imho almost all the tip picks, or files, will wear down your tip if used too regularly

i wouldnt use one, even if its ok for ROS, who allegedly goes through lots of tips anyway, so wouldnt mind if it lasted not too long.

dont overchalk is my best "help"...works for me, even if it doesnt look "full"

just press it over the tip surface with firm pressure for a few seconds, should work nicely to hold the chalk...

like i told u earlier & like Sem said, there is no need to sand the tip too often coz u'll wear it down very quick... in my opinion, Talisman tips (well, the hard ones since those are what i use) should only be sanded & shaped while putting them on as they hardly change their shape (been using mine for 2 months now & it's the same shape, i only use tip file pressure on daily basis).

I have one of those files in my tool box sam, when i was going through my tip gadget stage where i would buy anything which say that it can do wonders to tips.lol

I tried the tip pik which gently opens the top of the tip up to allow chalk to hold, i will keep these tools in my case and prep before my match starts, both the file and the pik down sand the tip down so it will last a long time but still hold the chalk well....

Btw i was looking in my box of tricks last night for a bit of chalk (i have hundreds of cubes) (new and used) and i came across to bits of triangle light grren chalk but its finer and a slightly different colour to normal, was this the original chalk or has there been three colours light fine green, light green and the dark green stuff, it hold on thetip better aswel, dont want to use it though as i only have to pieces

Yes Craig, as I have been saying for some time now Triangle did change the colour of their chalk about 4-5 years ago. If its the stuff that I think it is, and it sounds like it from your description, then its wonderful stuff, and does stick to the tip better and the texture is perfect.

It was mentioned by someone that Triangle had to change the recipe they used for this chalk though as it didn't comply with some EU regulations. Apparantly if it was accidently swallowed, even in a small quantity there was a cancer risk or something along those lines if I remember correctly.
They changed it and brought out the darker stuff which many people complained about, particularly sticking to the cueball and then they changed again to the light green stuff which is what they still produce today.

I have 1 full cube and about 1/4 of an old piece left and I'm dreading the day I have to start using the light green powdery crap.
So if anyone is listening out there, if you have any of this original green chalk produced around or before 2002 at the latest please contact me. I know its a long shot but I'm sure some people would have bought a box of 144 and still have some left.

I dont use this particular rare chalk i just noticed it in my box of tricks, i have about the same a cube and 1/2 i use the normal regular light green chalk.

Chalk that is old is an excellent substance in aiding grip; you only have to look at weight lifters who douse their hands in it prior to the big lift to realise its properties. Applying chalk to the Snooker tip further aids grip and reduces the miss cue effect.I myself find that Chalk is applied to the tip of the cue stick, ideally between every shot, to increase the tips friction coefficient so that when it impacts the cue ball on a non-centre hit, so i get no miscue (unintentional slippage between the cue tip and the struck ball) occurs. The quality of chalk varies greatly from brand to brand, which can significantly affect play. IF i play snooker in a hot country on holiday in these amusement places, places such as tenerife or malta, i find that high humidity can also impair the effectiveness of chalk.... Cue tip chalk is often not actually the substance typically referred to as "chalk," but some propriietary compound, frequently with a silicate base. "Chalk" may also refer to hand chalk, used to lubricate the cue and bridge hand during shooting (many players prefer talcum powder or a slick pool glove because of the long-term abrasive effect of actual carbonate chalk on the shaft of the cue).

Its very fine stuff maybe too fine for my taste. i imagine it would work very well on usa cues.
