Decided to remove the slightly too small (think it was about 8.7mm) Elk Master tip that came with the Taylor Made Classic cue and replace it with a larger ADR147 laminated, which from what I'd read, sounded about what I was looking for. So before heading off for a game with a mate of mine early this morning, I took the cue to my workshop..
Have to say, the recommendations on here were spot on. It played beautifully and was the exact mixture of grip and (what felt to me like) medium hardness that I was after. Didn't prevent me embarrassing myself on the table but it did at least inspire confidence in itself.
I guess you'd describe the result of my fitting as a 10mm "mini-mushroom". It's definitely overhanging slightly but by less that 1mm all round. I took the height down by about a third and didn't feel the need to take it down any further, although I only had time to shoot 3 frames.
Not sure it needed burnishing but I gave it a quick going over round the edge anyways.
Certainly holds the chalk well.
And finally, being as my case is new I thought I might try to look after this one so I found some random plastic cap in my workshop, that, with a little help from my Dremel, now fits like a glove and should stop the chalk from getting everywhere!
