How long to "play in" a new tip?

Hi!

I just had a new tip fitted and spent half an hour yesterday (that was all the time I had) hitting a lot of hard, centre ball striking shots. Even if I would have had more time I was all sweaty and trembling after hitting consecetive powershots for 30 mins...

How long do you usually need to make sure the tip has settled properly? I am really itching to play (new cue, a MasterCue Old Master 147, which feels awesome, but the tip was ****e)!

The simple answer is til it feels right.

Although it may never feel "right", if i'm not happy with a tip after a few hours of play i'll rip it off and start again - but i am rather fussey.

As Mellowyellow says, until it feels right for you. Most people have different preference for how they like a tip to feel. Some like them soft, some hard and some very hard.

Ideally you would be able to put a tip on and be able to play with the cue straight away, unless you are using a talisman tip you will just have to wait until it gets 'bedded in'.

I don't quite agree with taking the tip off if it hasn't beddin in within a few hours though. All tips should bed in eventually its just that some differ with the hardness/softness they are to start with but you are doing the right thing by playing a lot of firm shots to help get the tip to harden up. Just be patient!

i always feel after a few minutes that you either like the new tip or you don't simple as that
saying that i put a talisman on last week and lost big time and the tip felt fine i'll never work this game out!!! lol

i use Talisman Pro (hard) and it only took me a few minutes to get used to it... a couple of weeks to adjust with long pots but that was the first time i used it!!!

Every single make of tip is different as is each tip so the answer is there is no real answer, as a rule though the layered tips such as Talisman bed in in a few minutes because they are harder.

theres no "accurate time" due to whats been mentioned

generally, hard tips will "bed in" in less than 15 minutes, medium 30 minutes and soft, about an hour. all of constant play

.....but every tip can be slightly different, and depending on the amount of hits in that time, and the strength of strike, the times will vary, but thats about average IMHO

i think u will get the feel when the tip has bedded in and when u do, u will start playing your normal shots... what tip will u be using btw??

would be nice if u came back & told us about your experience with first time fitting as well i'm sure it will add to all our knowledge

I use the wooldridge single layer tips, they bed in very quickly, i can re-tip my cue a night before playing in a match and i know its going to be good, very consistent tip.

Ive had loads on my cue since they came out and i can only remember one bad one, which soon came off lol.

I sand my tip down all the tip, im never happy with the shape of it, so re-tipping is a twice a month job for me, very good at it now though......Thanks adr147

I'm using an Elkmaster tip. The original one that was fitted I don't know what it was, but it sure didn't feel very nice.

This one is a lot better. That didn't stop me from playing like absolute crap yesterday though...

I have played many times with a £500 cue and the perfect tip and still played like a muppet - it happens to us all!
