Tip question - can a pool-sized tip be cut down to snooker size?

I've noticed that while they're made in the States, the Elkmaster 9.5mm tips are not available out here at all, but have to be purchased from overseas. However, larger sizes for pool cues do exist in these locales...

I'm just wondering, are the Elkmaster pool tips available here the same as the soft ones for snooker I see on Ebay, and if so, how hard is it to shape it down for usage for my snooker cue?

We can buy the Elkmaster and blue diamond here in Canada of all various sizes with no problem. The bigger ones are thicker. I am pretty sure they order theirs from the US. May be you can order from a Canadian store. Try to get a 10mm if your tip is 9.5mm.

Elk are soft tips and trim down with ease.
I don't see a lot of point in 1/2 sizes, I would much rather start with an oversized tip and trim down.

9.5 are available in UK but be very carefull has most sold in UK at the moment are fakes

(though its easier if a tip is only 1mm diameter bigger than the ferrule on the cue)

how can you tell if your tip is a fake ? i have a box of fifty and cant remember where i got them from ! most likely off ebay.

I dont believe there are any fake tips out there myself. A box of 50 elks at say £10 or so trade price just doesn't make it viable for a forger. They ae not going to bother labeling some other cheaper brand that costs probably only a couple of quid less, a forger would be nuts to go to that much trouble to make such a pittance of a profit when he can copy say a £30 dvd game/film for 20p

IMO what happens is that very cheap tips that aint shifting are "reboxed" as a different brand to get rid of them rather than take the hit of not selling....and if sold in quantities of less than a box full just sold as a better brand of tip.

lots of fakes out there - if it looks too good to be true it is. - a box of proper elks costs me as you say about a tenner once tax etc is paid - i can buy the fakes from a place in china for £2 a box.

Same as with Moori tips - when they first came they were so revolutionizing people were happy to pay $50 - for a single tip! - no wonder that attracted deceivers.

£2 a box ! Blimey. btw the box of elks I have came from china. When I bought a couple of cue 'n case sets from that woman who told me she was worked for her uncle, owner of BS cues and that JX cues were owned by his brother, one of the cases had a slight dent in it and it was mentioned when we chatted on yahoo messenger, I wasn't complaining mind, she asked if they'd arrived safely as I was her first ebay customer and she was wondering if t DHL who she'd used were ok. Anyways a few days later a freebie box of 50 elks arrived from her with a note apologising about the dent. If they are forgeries then they are better than the genuine articlel there aint a duff one amongst them.

Much prefer the Talisman's though now, I cant truthfully tell one from an elk playing but they just don't want to wear down at all. Next time I buy a pair of Loakes I'd love the soles to be Talisman laminated.

Great news:

Apparently there's a North American website, Billiard Place, which has 9mm Elk Masters on stock! They also have green Triangle chalk, which I can't seem to find out here in metro Sacramento, so I'm chuffed :snooker:

why would they have 9mm elks in north america - make sure they are genuine - if you are not sure i am happy to post some.
