I used to have one of the old style irons and it was in storage for so long I think it might have ended up in a skip. Along with a brass swan neck and extended spider. Could have got a few quid for them.

Aren't older irons better in quality?

I'm not sure because I never used the old style one and don't know the method of using them on a table. It was covered in dust at a club I worked at so took it home. I used an electric one which are probably better at getting a smoother cloth. The old ones are probably valuable for the collector and display value rather than using them to iron a table.
