  • Tom Gauthier Snooker Cue Canadian Made

HI I have a Tom Gauthier Cue which was made in British Columbia by Tom Gauthier who made the best snooker cues on the Planet

A friend of mine paid $800.00 cdn dollars about 15 years ago would like to know how much would they be worth today.

Thanks Leonard from Montreal Quebec Canada

Are you selling it? I might be interested if you are. In terms of how much it's worth, it would depend on entirely on the condition. Does it have the epoxy joint or steel?

What are the specs on it? Ash or maple? Tip size, butt width, weight, ect.

Could you post some pics? I'd be able to give you an idea of what it's worth if you could show me what it looks like?

$400 to $500, if it is in top form--anything more you are paying for the sentimental value (like you really really want one and you just have to have one no matter how much.)

Should try it first, because they could vary quite a bit in terms of joint/butt diameter, balance point, and so on.

I wouldn't sell it either. But you can't blame me for asking

It's funny, no-one from the UK has replied to your thread. I don't think many of Tom's cues made it across the pond. And I tend to agree, that they are "the best cues on the planet". The epoxy joints he made have never been matched.

In the last few years he was making cues the quality slipped some as his health declined, but yours is old enough that it is no doubt a classic.

Is there anyone in Eastern Canada making good cues these days? Deroo does some nice work out here, but his cues are very pricey.

Did he run that 147 on TV with an Adam cue, or a Tom Gauthier cue?

No disrespect to Tom Gauthier's cue, but he is not the best cue maker in the world. He makes some cues that hit really well, but so do a lot of cue makers in the UK.

CT, his joint is not made with epoxy, it is made from a material called Micarta. Epoxy is what he likes to put on a lot of his cues to finish them, which is one thing I really do not like--and I believe so do a lot of players in the UK--because it feels really sticky.

In my opinion, Tom Gauthier cues' value lie in the shaft, and the balance. His workmanship is good but the cues are very simple--mostly a butterfly spliced butt with a half joint, or butts made from some other cues with shafts matching the butt made by him. It is a player's cues, not a fancy cues with intricate splices. Therefore, the value is never too high--unless you really like the way it hits, or you are a Tom Gauthier cue collector, or you just really want to have one and you do not care how much you have to pay. Usually, it goes around the 400-500 marks, unless if it is a 3/4 or a one piece or one with very fancy splicing works.

Because the value does not really lie in the butt (a lack of fancy craftmanship) but the shaft, if the cue does not have an original shaft, then it is worth very little.

                    Tom Gauthier Snooker Cue

HI Pooljunkie I aggree with you. The one that i have is a old Tom Gauthier cue . that i picked up a few year ago and would not sell it for any price as the hit of the cue is unbelieveable. I showed it to Alain Robidoux and he told me that a Tom Gauthier cue was better then a Marcel Jacques Cue when he played in England. There are not to many Gauthier Cues around and the price of a Gauthier Cue keeps going up. Leonard from Canada

Well I would imagine back then because big Bill and Cliff were both using Tom Gauthier, it was probably quite well known. Alain was most likely the only one with a Marcel cue in all of UK.

I dont understand if Alain liked a Gauthier more, why was it such a big deal when his cue was destroyed? Why didn't he just use a Gauthier cue?

HI poolqjunkie the reason why Alain Liked my Tom Gauthier cue as i only showed it to him resently. He was so comfortable with his Marcel Jacques Snooker Cue back then when he was on the Pro Snooker Tour and when his cue was destroyed because of a sticker on his cue that was the end of his career on the Pro Snooker Scene leonard from Canada
