Gauthier snooker cues
Although I have read that some individuals feel that Tom Gauthier cues may not be the best.... I would like you to stand beside Cliff Thorburn and say that. Or in any snooker championship for that matter. He did make the best cues. I watched him growing up and never has he put so much care and perfection in what he made. I believe the fact that the best snooker players in the world came to visit my father and purchase his cues for thier own personal use is proof enough of the quality of craftmanship and respect he delivered to each individual.
Thank you.
Christine Gauthier.

I bought two of them from Western Canada a few years ago from a person in Vancouver.
Your father was the best cue maker in Canada also a another great cue maker was from Montreal Quebec and his name was Marcel Jacques.
He made a cue for Alain Robidoux the Canadfian Snooker Champion on several occasions who later went to England to play in the Professional Snooker Tour in England in 1988 and at one time was ranked 9th in the World.
I showed my cue to Cliff Thorburn and he told me never to sell it who also has one and Cliff has babied it for 20 years.
A few years ago i saw a clip of your father on the Internet playing snooker with a friend of his where he made hs cues in his shop but this clip no longer exists on the Internet
Would you have this clip would like to hear more stores about your father as he was a great Cue maker and a great person
cheers leonard

Big Bill was playing with a Gauthier cue in the UK, is that correct?
What was Cliff using when he made that infamous 147? Was it an Adam?
I am always curious what cue Kirk was using, it looked like a Dufferin to me. Does anyone know?Last edited by poolqjunkie; 14 January 2011, 06:50 AM.

HI poolqjunkie I know that Kirk Stevens was using a Dufferin Snooker cue when he made the 147 in the Masters against Jimmy White not sure about Bill Werbenuik and Cliff Thorburn
i will ask Alain Robidoux because he gets in touch very often with Cliff Thorburn cheers Leonard

Yes, the cue Kirk used looks like a Dufferin 2 piece with a metal joint to me. The shaft looks shorter than usual in the video. I always wonder if he has had that shaft custom made for him or something.
I saw a picture of Big Bill with a cue featuring a red joint that looks like a Gauthier cue. I heard lots of people were interested in Gauthier cues back in the days when they saw Bill shooting with one.
I am pretty sure Cliff was not using a Gauthier cue when he made his 147 in the UK as the cue he was using looked very similiar to the cue he used in his book, which was clearly an Adam. In his book, there were quite a few pictures of him playing; however, in none of those pictures did I see him holding anything that resembled a Gauthier cue.
I am aware that he is using his Gauthier cue playing in the UK in exhibitions and so on now. I am not too sure if he was using that however when he was competing professionally in the UK.
Do you know if any top professional players in the UK ever played with a Gauthier cue?
The only top professionals other than the Canadians I know who played with a two piece cue are Dennis Taylor and Alan McManus but I think both were using Adam cues as well.

I ask him about which cue Bill Werbenuik was using while he was in the UK but CLIFF told me he did not know but would let me know
There was another Player using a two piece cue and it was John Spencer in the World Snooker Champioships Final 1977 against Cliff Thorburn
The story is that John Spencer was using a one piece cue and there was an accident and his one piece cue was shattered to bits
Cliff Thorburn invited John Spencer to Toronto Ontario in the Seventys and they went to the Dufferen Company and John Spencer purchased a two piece Dufferen Snooker cue of which later won the World Snooker Championships in 1977 Cheers Leonard

Thank you so much. It is so cool you can just ring Cliff up and aks him things like that.
Is it ture that he was using a Dufferin Trophy when he first went over to the UK? Or was it a Gauthier?
I did not know John Spencer was using a Dufferin. What model was it?
Actually I think I read somewhere before that Joe Davis and George Chenier were travelling together and George was playing with some old 2 piece cue (may be a Brunswick) and some players were intersted in his cue and some of them later switched to 2 piece cues due to the convenience.
Note: In Canada we call half jointed cues 2 piece cues.

Cliff Thorburn also played with a Brunswick Trophy Snooker cue not the replicas which were made by Dufferin.
Also note when Bill Werbenuik came to Montreal in the Seventys he was playing with a oiriginal Brunswick Trophy snooker cue and played a money match with Bob Paquete who has never won the Canadian Snooker Champs finishing 6 times second we call him the Jimmy White of Canada.
Also George Chenier who was the North American Snooker Champion also played in England with Joe Davis using a Brunswick Trophy Snooker Cue. In the 1950 these Brunswick Snooker Cues were selling under $20.00 per cue.
I have a few Original Brunswick Trophy Snooker Cues one is a one piece a Devenonshire the other is a Brunswick Trophy Snooker cue and the butt of the cue was ebony black

I have only seen one with a little shooting man holding a cue and there is a trophy picture there. The company name is not brunswick but "The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company". This decal comes off very easily and it is very hard to find one that is intact. The bottom of the points are also sharp rather than flat like the Dufferin trophy. Some trophy cues just say Brunswick trophy in gold which I was told was made in the Far East. I am sure if it says Brunswick then it was made after 1960 as before that Brunswick was called "The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company". I had a pool cue with a very beautiful decal before with an ivory ring at the butt from the old days, it was called a Willie Hoppe Titlist.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 15 January 2011, 01:25 AM.

The pictures are beautiful, I cannot believe how well the decal has been kept. That is truly a piece of gem you have there.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 15 January 2011, 03:29 AM.
