In my first month as a member here I have spent quite a lot of time reading the threads in Cues Forum, and I get the impression that there is a mixture of people who collect cues, others who get a new cue once in a while, and others who chop and change fairly regularly.
Nothing wrong with being in any of those categories - each to his own.
I am currently debating whether to have my cue altered or whether to buy a new one, and it got me thinking about how many cues i had gone through in my 28 years of playing:
1st Cue - two piece BCE 'Alex Higgins' maple, 15 1/2 ounces.
Loved this cue, was bought for me by my Gran and Grandad, used it for about 3 years.
2nd Cue - two piece ash - cannot remember name of it, 17 ounces.
Did not have this cue for too long - i was still young and decided i like the 'whoosh' when i whipped it through the air after missing easy shots. Unfortunately the table got in the way on one occasion and it broke.
3rd Cue - two piece ash Riley 'Stephen Hendry', 17 ounces.
Ended up playing with this for about 4 years - as Gran and Grandad were not going to buy me any more cues!!
4th Cue - 3/4 split BCE, 18 ounces.
This was a factory second - butt joint was slightly out.
Despite that I used it for about 7 years, and arguablyt played my best snooker with it.
Current Cue - 1 piece Joe Davis World Record Riley ash, 16 ounces.
I found this discarded in the rack of my club, it had been there tip-less
for about 6 months so i decided to claim it. It has an 11mm tip, and is as light as a feather, my mates wonder how i can play with it and call it a broom, but it has served my well. Its the cue i have stuck with for longest.
I am only 3 weeks into an 18 week season, so will be sticking with what i have for the time being, but am on the lookout for something new, the difficulty is knowing what i want!
I am pretty sure I want a smaller tip 9.5 - 10mm, and think I am going to go
for something slightly heavier, and I want one of those screw in butt thingys too.
I really want to 'try before i buy' which sort of eliminates ordering one over the net.
Any ideas of somewhere i can go in and have a go? I live in Stoke, so i can make anywhere within a 80-100 mile radius.
