  • My Cue History - so far!

In my first month as a member here I have spent quite a lot of time reading the threads in Cues Forum, and I get the impression that there is a mixture of people who collect cues, others who get a new cue once in a while, and others who chop and change fairly regularly.
Nothing wrong with being in any of those categories - each to his own.

I am currently debating whether to have my cue altered or whether to buy a new one, and it got me thinking about how many cues i had gone through in my 28 years of playing:

1st Cue - two piece BCE 'Alex Higgins' maple, 15 1/2 ounces.
Loved this cue, was bought for me by my Gran and Grandad, used it for about 3 years.

2nd Cue - two piece ash - cannot remember name of it, 17 ounces.
Did not have this cue for too long - i was still young and decided i like the 'whoosh' when i whipped it through the air after missing easy shots. Unfortunately the table got in the way on one occasion and it broke.

3rd Cue - two piece ash Riley 'Stephen Hendry', 17 ounces.
Ended up playing with this for about 4 years - as Gran and Grandad were not going to buy me any more cues!!

    4th Cue - 3/4 split BCE, 18 ounces.
This was a factory second - butt joint was slightly out.
Despite that I used it for about 7 years, and arguablyt played my best snooker with it.

Current Cue - 1 piece Joe Davis World Record Riley ash, 16 ounces.
I found this discarded in the rack of my club, it had been there tip-less
for about 6 months so i decided to claim it. It has an 11mm tip, and is as light as a feather, my mates wonder how i can play with it and call it a broom, but it has served my well. Its the cue i have stuck with for longest.

I am only 3 weeks into an 18 week season, so will be sticking with what i have for the time being, but am on the lookout for something new, the difficulty is knowing what i want!
I am pretty sure I want a smaller tip 9.5 - 10mm, and think I am going to go
for something slightly heavier, and I want one of those screw in butt thingys too.
I really want to 'try before i buy' which sort of eliminates ordering one over the net.

Any ideas of somewhere i can go in and have a go? I live in Stoke, so i can make anywhere within a 80-100 mile radius.

Tony Wilshaw, of TW cues, is in Stoke-on-Trent, I think he's got a shop where he has stock cues on sale; he also makes cues to measure. One of my mates got a cue made to measure by Tony and it's perfect! Specs right on the money, beautiful taper, brilliant player and the most elegant cue I've seen in a long time. The cue was expensive but worth every penny, made quickly, with good communication all along the process and Tony and Bill in the shop couldn't have been more helpful. They really go the extra mile for their customers.

    Highly recommended!

In in Stoke I first thought of Tony Wilshaw.
Craftsman in Leeds is very drivable.

I'm sorry, but "drivable", since when did that become a word?

              I had to check!
I do use quite a lot of words that aren't words so it wouldn't have surprised me if I'd made it up.

You could probably get any word in an online dictionary now if you tried.
              I'll check the Oxford later.

You don't have to, I checked in my New Penguin English and it exists, OK. I have to admit that I wouldn't have ever thought of using it myself and not in the way you used it but the word is valid.

I'd have probably said: Craftsman in Leeds is ... easy to drive to, or ... is within easy driving distance, or is easily drivable, just not ... very drivable. It doesn't sound right somehow.

Welcome to ... The English Forum!!

Please could you check to see if "Angelina Jolie is very drivable" would be correct?

                  Cheers!

Do you really want to "drive" Angelina Jolie? I can think of better ways to pass the time! But, it's horses for courses, I suppose.
