i was thinking of ordering a cue, what do u think is the right butt diameter is 27mm too thin? and does having a slimmer taper change the feel of the shot?

I tried 27mm once, it means that the butt is extremely dense; I couldn't get on with it but the cue was heavy as well, perhaps with a light cue it'd be OK.

Yes, it changes the feel of the shot. Generally, a thinner taper means a "whippier" cue; again, it depends on the "feel" you want from your cue and the other specs you want.

To be able to help more/better, if you could give more details concerning the specs and feel you want, that'd help.

          i was thinking of:
          one pc
          ash wood
          17.5 oz
          9.3mm
          27mm butt diameter
          slim taper/standard (still confused)
          balance at 16"

I think that with those specs a butt diameter of 27mm should be OK, but you'd be better with a cuemaker's advice, of course!

With a slim taper, your cue will be more flexible than solid, giving, perhaps, too much feel ie. being "whippy" (reacting like a whip) rather than a nice solid feel through the shot, but it depends also on the piece of ash chosen. What kind of feel through the shot do you like? Do you like a very responsive cue or a more solid feel?

All the cuemakers I know suggest a stiffer cue rather than a whippy one, but it's personal preference at the end of the day. I prefer a responsive cue, so the ash tends to be "softer" but I play English 8ball pool where I can get away with that sort of thing. You play snooker, so a firmer cue would be better, I think. The other advantage of a firmer cue is that the response you'll get will be more consistent, so your play will be more consistent too!

John plays with a 25mm thick/thin cue! If I remember what Kevin said correctly.

I played with a cue with a 27mm thick butt once, it felt OK in your hand, very comfortable and I normally play with a cue between 29 & 30mm. What I didn't like was that the cue was a 3/4 and the solid ebony butt was way too dense and took ages to warm up and made the cue very, very rigid feeling. I didn't like it at all and most people shared my opinion. However, given as Khizzy's looking for a 1 piece, I felt that it'd probably have all the good things and none of the bad aspects; however, if anybody thinks the contrary, I'm all ears.

yeah it was one of john's 'spares' and kev was explainin issues with gettin good balance with lighter cues in 3/4 and said it was easier with one piece cues due to ash running straight thru and the ebony being spliced on top as opposed to solid

Also why a slim butted 1 piece will feel less dense as opposed to a slim butted 3/4.
