  • Hixon and Sons cue

    Hi all,

i picked up this nice Hixon and sons cue on ebay. Machine-spliced Rosewood (?) butt and maple shaft.

I've seen other people's very helpful posts about Leeds-based Hixon on the forum here and assume that this was made just before the 1930s (when 'Ltd' was added to the name.

It was clearly a one-piece cue originally (you can see the grain continuing), and i guess all cues were one-piece before the 70s? and it's had a quirky clear plastic joint added to make it 2-piece (i assume in the 70s?). It's almost perfectly straight.

I was wondering whether it was worth having it refinished, or whether i should just leave it as is? Cheers, Jim

don't seem to be allowed to add pictures?

IIRC the clear joint was a feature of a particular cue-doctor in the 70s - sure someone will remember

I am sure the cue will benefit from a bit of TLC - maybe a new ferrule to replace the bone(?) one to make it more usable?

I have used Andy Travis (Sheffield way) many times for such work and he was always quick turnaround and vaklue for money

That's looks like a Bob Akre joint. I believe he still does some cue work

Thanks very much for the advice. The joint looks very well fitted. I think the ferrule is metal (brass?), it just seems to have some sort of white powdery residue on it.

                  right, ok

                  obvious very oxidanted then
You could try some high grade wire wool to clean the brass off - high grade so not to scratch the surface.
Often I will put some masking tape on the shaft to protect that from the wool
and see if the brass is still good

At least a new tip is in order

"sympathetically" - that is the word I was looking for but with family screaming around me I could not think of it !

Stick a Titanium ferule on if it needs a new one , stays nice and shiney and won’t wear down as quick .
