Maybe we can help you with the explanation. If you try and list what you don't like with the cue, then hopefully someone will be able to put the right term on it. Draw up a list of the positive things and the negative things and post them, Christian.

@cueman
The cue is already under discussion with H&O. I am looking forward how they handle that. A complaint will show true customer focus...
I was aware that custom made is not a guarantee and I found out that some cues far away from my preferred specs plays a lot better for me.
And I also agree that H&O and JP are really, really high priced. They use the same material as some others and they do not have a magic potion to make outstanding cues compared to others...
Will second everything you've wrote: Tried many top of the range JP and H&O cues and must say that in terms of value for money none of this cues worth it. but as I mentioned, as long as people are wiling to pay they will charge. In my opinion and experience, there are more than 4 cue makers who makes better cues for much less.Proud winner of the 2009 Premier League Semi-Final Prediction Contest

But a good brand is not coming from nothing and especially Will Hunt is considered as one of the best.
For JP it is different because in my opinion they do not have common quality standards for their cuemakers. Therefore it is a matter of luck to get a good one. John Parris himself is maybe not taking care good enough for his brand. It is one of the dangerous and difficult management situations when growing from a craftsman to a company.
For R&O it should be different. But I think no cue maker can avoid that he sometimes makes a cue that is made fantastic in terms of craftsmanship but does not play well.I am confused... Oh wait... Maybe I'm not...

Cues are simular to cars. Would you buy a car before you tested to see if there is an engine in it that runs fine? You should always try a cue before you buy Hunt, Parris, White or whatever.
That is assuming you have passed your snooker test (had a 50 +) and know what spec suits you best.
If the cue feels dead try changing the tip (I once owned a cue and it felt rubbish was going to sell it but then I realised the tip was one of those hard one's) so I changed it shaped it up and it played totally differently and altogether better.
If you must buy blind because you live abroad then I feel for you guys. Buying a cue for you is then russian roulette, so much harder, welcome to the snooker madhouse.

Chatlag,
Very disappointed to hear that you're not getting along well with your new H&O.
I have to reconsider ordering a black plate.
Being in Canada, I feel like I'm throwing darts in the dark. I don't have the opportunity to even see examples of fine custom cue makers, let alone actually try some cues before I buy. I'm willing to pay good money for a top quality cue and I have no problem with a wait time. I'm just getting frustrated by my inability to make a final decision and put an order in.
What are the full specs of your H&O? 3/4(12 or 16" butt) or 1 pc., length, weight, ferrule size, butt diameter. The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I know what you guys mean about the fustration of ordering from overseas.
If it's lifeless (and not just a dud tip) that probably comes down to the shaft wood they have selected.
Mike and Trevor have said there's no relationship between the number of chevrons and the playability of the shaft wood. If that's the case then it must be really hard to find a shaft with exceptional grain and playability. If a customer asks for something special regarding appearance then playing qualities might be overlooked...
That's just speculation on my part but I could be wrong... it happens sometimesTear up that manure-fed astroturf!
