  • Peradon - One piece cue rattle

Hi, I've got a 1 piece Peradon cue - made on the custom cuewizard website about 2 years ago. It's a pretty good cue, cost about £750 as I remember, I chose the P80 grade ash shaft.
I've been happy with it the first year, but over the last year, even though the ash was supposed to be seasoned properly, it is moving at the top and is now slightly bent.
It lives in case, stored flat in a locker in a steady temperature room (around 19-22 deg), there are no heat sources even close to the storage area lockers, so it must be the wood that is drying naturally.

Also it recently started to rattle on shots, and it drives me mad - it's a one piece, the ferrule is not loose, and the tip seems to be ok, although it sounds like the rattle is coming from up the cue, not from the butt.

Anybody know if there are any weights in these cues or something that might rattle loose?

    Cheers.

I don't know Peradon cues per se but a lot of supposedly one piece cues are in fact made from two pieces of timber that are joined beneath the butt splices, either dowelled and glued or with some kind of threaded metal pin. It could be this that has come loose.
I had a customer come to me last year with a cue that rattled and the tip was slightly horizontally split about halfway down, still well attached to the cue so it wasn't obvious, best to check the tip first if your cue sounds terminal.
Store your cue in a humid environment for a week, it may not be properly sealed and could be losing moisture, the bathroom is a good place as it will absorb moisture in the air after the shower is used and may straighten itself out.
If it does then re-finish it and seal it will several coats of boiled linseed or danish oil, if it doesn't then steam straighteneing is required and it will need to have the finish removed, steamed, straightened and then re-finished and sealed.
As it's a relatively new cue then this should suffice, it's the really old cues that have been bent for decades that are a problem to straighten, the wood retains a memory and reverts back.
Speak up, you've got to speak up against the madness, you've got speak your mind if you dare
but don't try to get yourself elected, for if you do you'll have to cut your hair

I've had cues where I would have sworn the rattle was from the bottom end yet it turned out it was the ferrule.
