  • burwat champion

Just wonderin why the burwat champion cue seems to be a cue that any colector must have ? there seems to be always 2 or 3 on ebay every week and i was just wanting to know what makes them special ?

sorry if this has been asked befor on the forum...

Because of Alex Higgins! His request for a new one on TV, and the subsequent feeling that this was THE cue you had to have to be able to play well made it legendary!

why is there not the same demand for the Powerglide Connoisseur that won mr hendry all 7 world titles...after all higgins only won 1 world title with his burwat..

Srephen never went on TV and launched a public appeal for a spedific cue because he couldn't play with anything else! Also, because if I remember correctly, everybody slated his cue for years, including his manager who said how can somebody play so well with such a bad cue (sic)! Even though it was a super cue and the connoisseur has a beautiful butt design, which I particularily like.

Last thing, Higgins gave the impression that without the cue he was nothing whereas everyone said that without Hendry, the cue was nothing!

So in a word then if alex hadent broke his onw burwat and begged the public for help then the burwat champion cue would just be another old cue !

Also as well as the Alex Higgins effect which can never be under estimated, no dis-respect to Hendry who is one of the greatest player's of all time but he's just not as popular as Alex so everyone remembers his tv appeal for a Burwat as in that era as he was the most exciting player.
I also think the Burwat is a better cue in its own right & more collectable than the Connoisseur, and it doesn't really matter what cue any talented player uses they could probably play with broom handles, so any of us having the same type of cue won't make us play like them .......just the illusion & hope that it might i suppose.

Ronnie O'sullivan also started his career with Burwat Champion..........but in reality most are actually too whippy to be great playing cues, unless you get very very lucky, and many of us have tryed to find that illusive one.

It does look really nice, I have to admit. I would have said that £275 is a bit steep for a Burwat Champion, but it looks like a nice one. If you were going to get a copy made by Trevor White, Tony Glover or Tony Ions then you'd have paid more than that anyway. Most important thing is that you are happy with the cue, that's all that counts, pal.

I agree with one of your points, in that a stiff Burwat is elusive, but I don't think that the Burwat is a better cue than the Connoisseur; as you said yourself, most of them are too whippy to be great playing cues, and Connoisseurs are still good playing cues nowadays. The Burwat has more history than the Powerglide, but also has the mythic name Burroughes & Watts as well, so it is more collectible but perhaps in years to come, the Connoisseur (why did they not spell it right?!!?) will be the Burwat Champion of today.

Does look nice mate.........i've tryed lots of these over the years & only 2 have been great playing cues........one was an untouched, unspoilt first edition, the other another first edition that had been centre split into a two piece ( ouch ! ) & shortened to 56" long which i think actually helped solve the usual whippy problem.

Some look great........but don't always play great.........but thats the fun.....finding one that just might look great & play great.

Good luck with it though mate let us know how you get on

Good point......depends on peoples reasons for buying them, some buy to add to a collection & never use, some will be looking for that great playing cue.

I agree about the Connoisseur in that there's more chance of it being a better playing cue & as you say a possible future collectable, i just meant really at present the Burwat is more desirable to have out the 2 cues in my opinion.
