Taom chalk - more miscues

Afternoon all. After a bit of advise about a tip/chalk combo.

I've been a triangle chalk user since I started playing 30 years ago but have recently tried Taom V10 chalk. I like the idea of it but I do find that I miscue quite frequently now having hardly miscuing before the switch.

Up until Tuesday I'd had a few miscues using Taom in the month i'd been using it, crafty cue mentioned about the new chalk not sitting well on the old chalk so it was new tip day yesterday - just an Elkmaster standard tip. Played 8 frames last night and had 2 miscues. I know it's not loads but when I never used to do it at all it's disappointing more than anything. I don't want to get into specialist tips really but I'm close to going back to triangle unless someone can recommend a suitable tip that works well with the Taom chalk?

I’ve commented about this on another thread. Same problem for me. Bought myself a block of TOAM V10 and was mis-cuing. Have gone back to triangle.

I am a Taom V10 user and have been using this for many solo sessions and various league and comps ( more than most on here) and rarely miscue .
The difference I have found form Triangle is that you have to make sure your chalking your cue more and that you ‘rough’ your tip up more to make sure the chalk is adhering to the tip . I do this with one of those needle type gadgets at the beginning of every session.

I’ve been using Taom pretty much since it came out ,I get the odd miscue but I always did with other chalk too,used to use triangle and Elkmaster tips but got fed up with poor quality elks falling to bits or crumbling ,or losing the shape .Taom v10 with a century g3 tip works fine for me .

I honestly cannot for the life of me tell the difference between any of these chalks... 😶

certainly not a difference worth 20gbp or whatever it is.

Thanks all for your comments, it's good to hear other peoples experiences. I'm kind of glad to see Nifty has a similar story to me. I know a mate who would love me to donate my chalk to him

It's interesting the view of Starsky saying you need to chalk the cue more, I thought one of the main plus points of this chalk was you could chalk less. Not that I do, I don't know a single player who doesn't chalk while pacing round the table thinking of their next move. I did win the division in my local league this season and used Triangle throughout and didn't miscue once over 88 frames and only dropping.

mikee I have always wondered about trying out a Century tip but the hardness is something I don't know much about. I've been told Elkmaster standard tips are more akin to a medium tip but I don't know how true that is. G3 would be considered medium/hard would it not? How long have you been using that brand and would you use it again once you are done with your current tip?

I'm playing again tonight for a few hours so I think tonight might be it's last chance before I consider maybe a Century tip.

I tried Taom Pyro and V10 and found I had the same issue. Taom Soft isn't as bad so you can try that. But I am using Magic Chalk now and this is probably the best chalk in my opinion.

I think the idea that you have to maintain your tip more i.e. roughing, more frequent chalking with the Taom chalk kind of shows that it isnt as good as Triangle in terms of grippiness/miscues

Does that chalk leave streaks on the table like triangle?

I use Taom v10 for two reasons only. I like the clean table ( two player scenario using it obviously)and personally I'm getting almost zero kicks and miss cues. Even when I have had a bad contact it's nothing like the thunderous ones that were happening too often with Triangle.

I'm not anal about it, but when you get the chance to play on a brushed, blocked n ironed table with clean balls it's lovely to maintain that state of conditions over a 3/4 HR session.

I know what you mean crafty, I had the pleasure of a session mid last year on a freshly covered FS with Hainsworth Match and a set of 1G balls, really enjoyed it. Just makes everything else before it pale into insignifcance.

The century g3 is similar to a good elkmaster , maybe a bit harder ,since I got my new cue with titanium ferule December 2021 that’s all I’ve used ,I’ve had 3 of the g3 tips on it now and all have been good .Mark Williams probably uses the hardest tips in the pro game ,think he uses a g5 or he used to ,but whatever it is now it’s like concrete ,he also uses Taom and doesn’t miss cue ,he’s a pro with good technique so it works .I wouldn’t say any tip is better than any other it’s all personal preference and you may think a century tip is rubbish ,your best off trying a few until you find a brand of tip and chalk you like .Interesting thing about Mark Williams ,he tried a titanium ferule and it sent his game haywire so went back to brass .

I tell you what makes infinitely more difference than chalk... A tip.
Just put a new tip on my American Pool cue (Cp21-hybrid pro ii - for anyone who's interested and the tip is MW Supertip - the green ones, in M), left it half a day, and some bloody return this evening. Could have beaten anyone. 7-1, 7-2, 7-0
Same tip I am using on my snooker cue. I know some people say they aren't as good as the old ones (price on selling APP reflects that here), but have nothing but good things to say about these. I buy the M, and they are H with just enough feel. Hold shape and chalk well. I am curious how much of the 'feel' is real, and how much is familiarity, psychology related. Anything beats the piece of granite I had on the end before! (although, there is no replacement of the feeling of well timed screw from that. It's like hitting a nice drive on the range)

To keep it thread relevant, using the Pink Taom chalk last night, both players, I think in terms of residue, I am cleaning the white ball just as often, it's just I can see the marks less/the colour is lighter. I had a few horrible kicks last night actually.

Working for me on both snooker and pool cues - Really the best tip I have used since playing more regularly again.

Had some more nasty kicks last night! Same scenario as before. American 8, pink taom chalk. Good job I still won, or I'd be steaming.

Two or three times there were some really heavy contacts. Cleaned the white every frame. Balls were cleaned before the game.

Side Note: Anyone else constantly leaving things like chalk lying around? if it wasn't my regular club, I'd have lost this $$$ chalk long ago. Would I buy more? (maybe if they make a rainbow one)
