  • Should I go Ferruless?

Has anyone used, or looked into using, a ferruless cue? If you have, what are the advantages and disadvantages of a cue without a ferrule?

Why would you want to do that unless you want to be buying a new cue all the time .Disadvantage is that it will more than likely crumble or split ,changing tips will wear the end down and it’ll never be level .Advantages, none I can think of .

Thanks Mikee. I've heard that the lighter tip reduces deflection when using side. Rather like a titanium ferrule would, but perhaps more so.

Fitting a graphite or titanium ferule would be the best thing ,titanium is very hard and won’t easily wear ,it weighs very little .

I used an old billiard cue for UK 8 ball that didn't have a ferrule. 11mm tip, pro tapered for twelve inches until it widened towards the butt, played very well with it. When I joined my local snooker league there were a few old boys still playing with cues that had no ferrule but then again they learned with the old crystalate balls and played a different run through, sidespin game than the modern power game.
I've just put a ferrule on an old billiard cue I bought off ebay, buffalo horn, black, very, very light and quite strong but it marks easily when changing tips so one has to be careful, you could go for something like that or a fibre ferrule like those used for US 9 ball. There's a lot of choices but brass is light, hard and has proven itself over many decades, nothing wrong with it.
