  • burwat champ on ebay - opinions?

looks fishy to me, he put a couple more pics up at my request, but no weight stamp and in my opinion it looks like the shaft and butt dont match....

i was only interested in it as i fancy a glover replica and thought it might be one, but as it doesnt appear to be one feel free to bid away if you want

There's an olde ash cue on eBay that looks like it might be one of Tony's, might be worth a look. You can always ask Tony if it's one of his or not.

      hmmm
      Badge looks clean and clear.
      New?
Splice like nothing I've seen on a burwat.
      Burr of some kind.
A few people have made burwat replicas: A.E. Ions (well known for them), Tony, Trevor White, Kev Muncaster probably all the cue makers would make you one up.

half the badge is worn off, but looks like it might have been done intentionaly. if the joint on it looked better i'd probably buy it, but the grain doesnt seem to match and one side has thicker brass han the other so looks iffy to me.

dont really want to buy a new replica cue, as it wouldnt be my main playing cue (just another toy)... hence looking for a second hand jobby in this price range.

Nice cue but I dont think its genuine.

The front splice dont look right for a start and the shaft and satin wood veneer dont seem to have aged at all.

            Bit too new looking.
Just because its old, doesn't mean its worth a fortune!!

Once again another question of authenticity crops up. I really do wish the likes of Ions never offered to make replica cues. I've got no problem with people making copies of designs but when they actually reproduce the badge so that its nigh on impossible to tell the difference this is where the problems start. In this day and age where fraud is commonplace its not helped by cue makers aiding them by selling them on Ebay where there is little or no comeback on them.

To be fair, I've never heard of a cuemaker selling a replica cue on eBay as a genuine one. They always specify that it's a replica and sell their cues as being replicas. What people who buy them do with them afterwards can't be their responsibility.
But I do understand where you're coming from with the principle of a replica so well made that you can't tell the difference!

The problem is that unless you know what doing it is very difficult to tell the reals from the fakes this a particular problem to anybody new to collecting who perhaps does not have anybody to show them how to recognise a fake, I was very fortunate when I started to collect to be introduced to Dave Smith Who became a friend and showed me what I needed to know.

Currently have 3 burwat champions with one being a maple copy which is so good there are probably only a handful of people who could tell it wasnt genuine.

I didn't actually mean cue makers selling them, I didn't really make it clear, I meant that them making them and selling them on for others to pass on as genuine is where the problem lies.

The simple solution would be for cue makers to simply say the only way I can do a replica badge is by putting something on the badge to show its a replica. I know it defeats the object in a way but why would anyone want a perfectly reproduced badge to look authentic? Unless of course the want to pass it off at a later date for more money than its worth!

I once went to Tony Ions house in Newcastle and while I was there I showed him a 'Burwat Champion' that I had recently bought and he took it from me, looked at the cue and said that it was one of his cues!! He then went on to say that, in his opinion, the original Burwat Champion cues were not of the greatest quality! He said that it was quite rare to get really nice grain patterns or really first class straight grain ash on the Burwat Champion cues as B&W mass produced them.

Not sure thats entirely valid, as in this instance if he could have confirmed to me that it was a glover/ions replica I'd have actually bought it, as in my opinion a replica from either of those guys is worth more than a butchered Burwat Champ!

If you can find a good replica from any of the top cuemakers for less money than an origional let me know and I'll take it!

In that case, contact Idid150 on eBay, as he's got a huge collection of old cues, including many copies. He seems to know which ones are copies and is always very specific when listing them. He has so many and has flooded eBay with them recently, so I think you've got a good chance of getting a good copy for a good price. You can mail him on iandavies150@talktalk dot net or call him on: 07811676721. I'm also pretty certain that if you want several then you can do a deal.

I have seen some horrible ones, but I have seen some gems. Thing is if you get a thick one, the shaft is generally good, the thing is there are so many with the old billiard tapers that if I was buying one off ebay I'd want to see a pic of the top two feet of the cue at the tip end.

I have never, ever seen a bad ye old ash tho!
