  • Help identifying cue

    Hello!

I'm new here but I wonder if anyone can help me. We recently found an old snooker cue that belonged to my grandad, and I was hoping someone might know anything of its origins.
We believe he would have purchased this in the 1950s in the Birmingham area, however we can't be sure on the year it's a bit of a guess unfortunately. It's a one piece cue and as you can see by the badge it was created by "Grenvilles". I did a google search on that and it does show up that a snooker club called Grenvilles exists in Solihull but we aren't sure if they are related or not, and can't confirm that that was a snooker club he visited, it seems likely though!

Sorry not to have much info but on the off chance anyone recognises this or has any extra info it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks all

Grenville's was a sports shop in the centre of Birmingham which sold a bit of everything, much like a lot of the oldschool sports shops which internet shopping killed off. There is still the Greville building on Cherry Street, but the sports shop is no more. I don't know whether there was any link between the shop and the snooker club, but I think the cue is probably from the shop.

Interesting, thank you! Had no idea about the sports shop but I agree completely, it seems more likely that the cue is from that shop. What a shame that it no longer exists!

      Thanks again.

Hi Dean… yes sorry it gave me an error every time I pressed post and as you saw I tried it a few times, only to see that the error wasn’t even stopping my post! Sorry about that.

No worries - I thought it may be something like that.
When TSF was transferred to a new server and new version we all went through very much the same, took a while to get used to and for it to settle down.
Let me know if you see anything unexpected.
            ciao
            Up the TSF! :snooker:

I'd only add to this, that the shop was at 12 Cherry Street and they were operating as a general sports outfitter from this address for a long time. This telephone number was used by them from 1934 to the late 1960s when they switched to all-figure dialling in Birmingham. This cue is probably post-war, so 1950s, to early 60s.
