  • Cue tip diameters

This may be a basic question, in which case I am sorry for asking, but if a tip is referred to as 9.5mm, is that the diameter of the ferrule or tip itself? Watching James Watana tonight, his tip seems slightly wider than the ferrule.

Apologies if I have put this question in the wrong section.

"Listed" tip size is usually the ferrule.
When a tip is larger than the ferrule it is sometimes called a "mushroom" tip

Never understood this myself as the overlap would distract me when down on the shot, also I think the overhanging tip material would be more prone to breaking due to less support. ?

Thank you DeanH, I had thought it referred to the ferrule, but saw the wider tip on TV tonight, which prompted the question. Like you, I can't understand the overhang, but thank you for clarifying what I had initially thought was correct.

Installing thinner ferrules is no problem, but then installing larger ones again.

Some players then switch to the overhanging tips. This avoids having to take a new or a shortened cue and the often long adaption process that comes with it.
