  • Barracuda Gold Medal Cue

Hi newbie here , just started to play the game and my friend has offered me a Barracuda Gold Medal Cue for £35 , are these cues ok for a beginner or is it a cue designed for the pros' ?

Any help would be really appreciated

    Many Thanks

    Chris

To sum up, It's basically all up to individual preference.

maybe you can try playing with other cues and obtain a general idea how one would suit you? eg, weight, butt size , length etc.

Try it and if you like it, buy it, it's a good price.

Every single professional tournament Mark williams ever won, was won using one of these cues, so there's clearly nothing wrong with some of them.

Though his was pretty untidy to say the least.

I think there is a difference when they were made.
The older the better I believe. The new ones are Chinese imports from a company that bought the Barracuda name.

Thankyou , the cue is around 8 years old so I think for £35 is a decent price

the older ones had a different badge to the new ones the old ones had a small brass disc with a little screw in the middle i have seen quite afew of these and there good cues the new ones with the plaque style badge are nowhere near the quality of the older ones.i belive kevin muncaster from north west cues used to work there.

The old barracuda is heaps better!!!!!! i personally used 2 gold medal when I first started to play snooker,, my girlfriend got me the 1st one for around $300, it's a solid cue, I was very happy with the quality, but I snapped it one day because of the frustration I got from practice.... then I went onto ebay and bought another one for $160, and I can say that the quality is nowhere near my old one...and I dont like it at all....

I had one of the older 'gold medal' cues... It was a fantastic cue and still would be if i hadn't accidently dropped it and made it 2 inches shorter!

Sounds a good price at £35. But, you've got to play with it and see how you get on with it!!

I've got two barracuda golds and they are good cues, but they are both varnished and my playing cue now is a Mike Wooldridge Pro 3 which I got to see the differance between oiled and varnished. The differance is night and day and I even encouraged a friend with a Barracuda Gold to sand off the varnish and oil the shaft which he's done and it's a great improvement. By the way, both my Barracudas cost around $300 Australian.

Agreed, the difference is huge... My playing cue now is JP Ultimate, it's more responsive and firm. heaps better than my old baracudas

Thanks all the replies , have bought the cue.

Played the other night and it felt good , I got beat 7-5 however I have lost so far on 13 straight occassions to my friend who is a lot better than me at present and plays with a North West Cue that he reckons used to belong to Ian Mculllouch ....for my first owned cue Im more than happy with it and the price seems good

Thanks all for the advice , loving the forum , quite new to snooker so hope to be around and beat my friend at long long last with the Barracuda

                        Thanks

Got a Barracuda Gold Medal 20 years old (original with the screw in the middle).
Few months ago someone offered me 250 € (about 200 pounds) for it cause its a collectors item.
Refused and still play with it.
                          35 pounds sound reasonable then.
Is it worth that much then ?
