Not trying to hide that it's ebony? I thought the "butt" was ebony with a tulipwood "splice"? Or do I have that wrong?

Glad really, considering I'm not a fan of solid tulipwood - How would the splice stand out, then?

Its tulipwood with ebony then laid on top of that... hence the black bit its an ebony butt, with 2 splices isnt it? ebony over tulip.

As said previously, I'm not up with the terminology and wouldn't know how to say anything definitively.

One thing I do know is the seller told me it was a "solid ebony butt with single tulipwood front splice tipped with 2 maple veneers" in his own words. The guy seemed incredibly knowledgeable and had many cues, so I cannot imagine him being wrong... A more likely explanation is that I have lost something in translation.

None the less, the above is what I know and base my comments from; To me the word "solid" assumed that it was indeed ebony as I stated before... If I'm still wrong, please correct me... I'll get there eventually!

Ebony butt, two maple veneers and a tulip wood front splice... correct so far
(if it's tulip - I don't really know lots about wood).

And then there's the ebony facing splice on top of that (the "black bit").

            Gotcha!

Still doesn't help me understand this, though :

Quite clearly there are other woods than ebony, but I'd still consider it an ebony butt. Maybe I see things too black and white (No pun intended ).

Anyway, who cares... I never was good at woodwork... Nor snooker for that matter ... Nice cue mind!

You said that it is an ebony butt with maple veneers and one tulip wood front
splice. Since there is an ebony facing splice as well and you haven't mentioned it,
he asked whether you couldn't see it...

Well, metaphorically I don't suppose I could... I assumed that the butt was one piece and they somehow insert a splice - My lack of understanding on cue construction more than anything, I guess.

                    Next time, I'll keep quiet

                    "must try harder..."

oh and what do you think regarding that cue is going to be for pool what should I choose butt jointed or center jointed?
You cannot improve your game if you don't have a cue and snooker table

Good job I've never ordered a custom cue, isn't it? Who knows what I'd of ended up with!

It's much easier just looking at it and thinking "Yeah, that's the one!" I'm proud of it, that's all that matters to me, heh.

Anyway, I've taken this topic away from the OP too much for too long...

                            Answers/help for the OP?

                              My favourite design for a pool cue would be;

Macassar Ebony butt, 4 secondary splices of macassar ebony with maple veneers......beautiful
