I think Andrew knows the different between a replica and a real cue, if it is a replica Andrew would be first to call it !!

I would have to agree that the visible section of shaft left at the bottom of the cue butt is not really any indication of the originality of this kind of cue.

One things for sure Burwats never lose there appeal, you can never under-estimate the Alex Higgins effect on these even after all these years.
It can cause confusion but its worth knowing there's lots of Burwats which all vary in terms of style and weight, splices used etc 1st editions square back cut in the shape of a billiard cue, with indian rosewood butts 2nd editions more of a rounded back the rosewood replaced with ebony, 3rd editions & interim models, thats why its best to compare like for like.
Plus when you consider over how many years they were made there's quite a bit of difference between the very early versions to the later ones.

true there are an awful lot - every year i see a couple i have never seen before - the only one i have not seen yet and would like is a pearwood one but i bet there is one out there.

yes that's all part of the fun that keeps collectors & players interested, the search for the unspoilt mint one, the search for the illusive great playing one, or the one thats a little bit different to the rest you've seen.
My favourite has to be the first edition the indian rosewood butt looks lovely, as you say though not only ash versions, there are maple & pearwood...not to mention a few other versions we might not have even seen yet..........
