  • My Cue Is Broken

I took out my MasterCue M3 Superb for the first time today in about almost 1 and a half years and I noticed that every time I pot the ball, it would make a vibrating sound like something inside the shaft of the cue is loose. I'm pretty sure that the cue is done for. I had the cue for almost 6 years now and I never once abused it in anyways or leave it in the car. I am still not sure what happened to it. Maybe it was the harsh Canadian weather, really cold and dry winters. I don't recall ever greasing the cue except once (someone told me it wasn't really required), but I would always take a damp cloth and whip it down with water when it got sticky then take another towel to dry it off.

I want a new cue pretty badly, but I rarely play anymore. Maybe once a month because I'm really busy with school and work. If I spend money on another MC, will it break on me again? I'm pretty noobie when it comes to taking care of the cue. I don't think I did anything wrong other than forgetting to grease it. Maybe it's the weather. Blah. Advice? Reason why it broke? Get another one?

As wood ages, there might be minimal shrinkage. And when that happens, the ferrule will be loose and hence the noise. You may want to check that?

I agree when the ferrules loose it can seem like something is loose in the butt. That would be the first thing i would check

yep, sounds like a Loose ferrule, but I would try to re-tip, somtimes you hear this sound just cos of a loose tip.

Could just be the tip or a loose ferrule & if its a 3/4 jointed cue, the joint could be the problem & need re-setting, but any of these problems will cause a vibration effect.

I'd check all these things in that order as when you replace the tip you'll be able to check the ferrule at the same time anyway to see if there's any movement in it, before fitting the new tip.

If not the tip/ferrule the joint will be the problem, or i suppose if its not naturally weighted, a weight inside the butt could have worked loose.

Hope this helps..........good luck with it anyway!

one of the makers will know, however generally speaking theres 3 reasons for noise.
ferrule, although i reckon yer can tell by just trying to move it.
joint, although making sure its tight an sometimes using wire wool on the threads.
weight, this is usually the main one if the noise is deffo from that area.
sometimes cues are just noisy, however this doesnt asppear to be the case.

Thanks you for all the great replies. I will bring it in to one of my local club and ask someone with more knowledge to check it out for me. Hopefully he will find out the problem and I won't have to drop another couple of hundred for a new cue. I love this one so much. It took quite awhile to get used to it.
