I just want to add that I have come across some players who really cannot stand to see little spots or grains on their maple shafts. Sometimes, it is just a tiny piece of brown dot but it could totally throw them off. For ash shaft, since there are so much more grains, may be such players will not be as fussy because any little blemishes in the grain might look less significant being among all the grains?

I do think maple and ash have different hit. It is subjective though. I personally think maple feels a bit softer and ash feels a bit firmer. But it may just be the timber on the cues I have tried being that way.

I always thought there would be a market for laminated shaft made with ash/maple in alternate lamination. Anyone tried it?

i use maple as there is no visable grain to look at as keeps you eyes on the balls rather than on the shaft however i reccomend you try a maple cue out in a shop before decideing what shaft to go 4

7 time world champion uses a maple cue cally and allways has, allthough i use a 1pce maple, I have been thinking of changing to a ash cue as im just not getting on with the cue at the moment, maybe i will do better with an ash cue as ive never really used one. one thing about maple cues is that they are like tanks and will last forever if you look after them, and do not put your foot through them like ive done a few times lol. learnt my lesson fast though.

I am just wondering, without much experience with ash, is polishing, burnishing, and oiling not going to be enough for smoothing the ash?

poolqjunkie : We use our secret receipt 'grain filler' too, here. But not with all ash shafts. Only where necessary

cueinhand : I really like the clean look of a maple, though I have many fine ash woods for making good ash cues. Perhaps I need to give the maple more tries. For action, I prefer medium to stiff for ash, while medium for maple. The girl in my avatar, watched me play with both woods once, said to me "Boss, it's all your faults to miss the easy shots.
