ive found that black graphite powder is very good ...

rub it in with fingers leave for a couple of hours then sand using wire wool

Sounds like a good and simple idea. Are you sure it wont darken the white part of the shaft but only the grains?

only done it to a couple of cues so yet to master it but seems to work..

but it does take some sanding ..
