  • Hi guys just wondering why most cuemakers don't seem to offer curly maple as a splicing option - on MW's site there are some photos of cues with such splices and it is offered via his vcm but on the whole not very popular elsewhere? I think it looks amazing!

Also is it possible to use really heavily figured maple like the 'AAA quilted maple' you see in the most expensive of electric guitars? as that would also look brilliant I think!
    Is this a question...? Discuss.

Most do use it alot. Id say its one of the top 10 most requested in my personal opinion.

Or you can always have curly purpleheart

      • Really? I think pretty much all the cuemakers websites I have looked at don't seem to list it as an available option when you fill out their custom order forms. Haven't seen many pics of really nice ones posted either excepting the one in this thread a few pages back. Do cuemakers rely on people specifically requesting it?
Definately haven't seen any quilted maple examples - do you know of any you can point me in the direction of?

          • Wow! Do you use curly and quilted maple? What sort of prices would you ask for such a cue?

            • I think most will do the likes of quilted, fiddleback, curly maple etc. Out of all the cuemakers I think Parris shows very few woods on his site at the moment. But some makers you can make a request for anything within reason and they will let you know whether it is a good/bad idea. You can even get a piece yourself and send it to some and they will put it on your cue!

Yes i have alot of curly and quilted maple at the moment.

                  • Hi Poolqjunkie
All your cues displayed look fantastic especially the chevrons, so evenly spread. Do you have a website/cataloue with prices? What is the brand of your cues?

                            My favorite is snakewood.

I am working on a few cues and almost all of them have snakewood.

Burl is my #2 and then tulip #3.

I also like a wood called bocote and zirocote but they do not seem to be used at all on snooker cues.

                            What about you?

Thanks for showing us your work, the cues look fantastic..

Any of them for sale? Do you make longer cues?

                            • Is walnut not used by English cue makers? It's a beautiful wood, and is very workable from the carpentry aspect. Here's a guitar made of figured walnut, probably the most exotic of walnuts:

                                Is that Curly Koa too?

Walnut is used indeed. Just not requested alot as its not really as exotic as others i guess.
