i used to be a great believer in putting tape round the butt of ones cue and till i used a mates pro5 cue which had a smaller butt diameter than i was used to. to say it felt better with more control of the cue is an understatement, i now wished i had not been so set in my ways over the previous 20 years!!!
So it's Rorschach and Prozac and everything is groovy

        I personally prefer 29.5-30mm.

I think it fits into the hand better than the thinner butts, and allows more control!

That goes to show it's all a matter of opinion.

Yea I agree with checkside, my first cue had a very slim butt (which looked great IMHO) but the grip was all over the place, i.e., I never felt I was gripping it at the same spot every time. With a thicker butt that was no longer a problem for me as I had more contact with the cue and it gave me more control as well. Having said that though, it is probably a matter of personal preference and seeing what works for you. Give it a shot and try out different sizes and see what works for you, that's probably the best thing to do

Id go for a 29.5mm rather than a 29mm, it would be possible to reduce it to 29mm if you cant get on with it, not sure how you could turn a 29mm butt in to a 29.5mm.

You may want to put some kind of tennis tape, rubber, sleeve on the butt, or a wrap like in 9 ball cue, to make it bigger. Otherwise, I have no idea.

Do you find that a cue with to slim a bit seem to lack power on certain shots?

It would be a crime to buy a hand made cue then wrap some tape around the butt!

is there a significant difference between 29 and 29.5?

My original butt size was 30mm, which I though was a tad too big. I got JP to make me a new butt with the size 29mm. It feels more comfortable to grip and I get more feel from it, but I find it a tad too small. So my new cue on order from T.White has a butt size of 29.5mm which I feel will be more suitable for me. You can definately tell the difference fom 30mm to 29mm, it's just a slight difference but a significant difference to my game.

Personally say there is a huge difference between 29 and 29.5....

I had an old sportshop cue which i liked the size of but having never tried anything different before I just asked for just a standard butt size when ordering my new cue. Im not sure which i prefer to be honest, if I got a new cue I think I would go 29mm (my current cue is 29.5) though whether this turned out to be a wrong descision who knows :P

But the thing that got me was the different in feel between 29 and 29.5, My current cue feels quite big to me, and my old one feels very small, I couldn't believe when I measured it and it was only 0.5mm difference!

I think im going round in circles here... so I'll just say its personal preference, I know people that like thinner butts and some that absolutely detest them
