Why does cue 5 have a rectangular piece of wood holding the butt joint in and the other cues don't?

Ah yes, thanks I can see that now. Always wondered how they added the veneers.

its not a veneer the two splices on the side are different wood to the 1s front and back .

If the cues are labelled 1 to 10 from left to right, I am talking about cue number 6. What wood do you think this is, I'm pretty sure it's rosewood, but I have never seen that deep and dark a grain in the wood before - especially not at such regular intervals.

I'm thinking of ordering an Osbourne, and I really would like to get some splices like this.

An I just being an idiot, and this is indeed rosewood?
