  • AshWood Grain "Gap/Crack"??

    Hi

I have a MasterCue PB1, been using it for years.
The ashwood grain near the ferrule seems have have some cracks or gaps and my chalk dust seems to get trap in it and i couldn't clean it away.

Attached is 2 picture of it.

Have asked a local cue shop and was told to use the Linseed Oil to let it absorb and fills up the gaps. tried with repeated application of the oil (seems like feeding medication to the cue everyday) and leave it overnight.

It doesn't seems to help and was told maybe sanding off with a light layer and apply linseed oil to seal it off.

also, i do take very good care when chalking and forms a habit, my chalk never touches my shaft or ferrule as i chalk across. Only the dust which falls off the tip landed on the area.

Any guys experience this problem before? what should it do with it?

Was thinking of sanding then oil it with linseed then use the cue wax for pool cue to seal off? advisable to do this?

I have big images, so i leave it as links instead:

      Hey bro,

It is not a crack but a gap formed after the grain on your shaft peel off.
The only way is to use wood sealer from any DIY shop to patch it up.
Or wise you can also use wax to cover up if you kung fu is still not up to standard.....
      Just kidding.....
      Just my 2 cents worth

Thanks Willy. You think Qshop will be able to do a good job for it?

Don't think i will do it with the wood sealer. It may leave ugly marks or "fake" grain looks.

Btw, i notice that cues do get a layer of varnish or laquer (not sure which as i'm not a carpenter).

Is it possible to use the varnish or wax to seal it up like a brand new cue use to have the "shiny" layer?

offtopic: found that you are quite active here and pool-fanatic forums buying and selling cues. How do I get to buy these UK made cues like Trevor White, JP etc...? Can't really find them selling around the shops locally.

        Thanks

personally i would get some good grade linseed oil and rub it in for a few days, then wax over it and polish it after

its only chalk in the grain of the ash though, not actual cracks in the tip (unless you aree seriously whacking your shots!!!)

You could have a new ferrule put on and ask them to sort out the wood just below the ferrule, should only cost a tenner. I've seen a lot of cues on which the wood has shrunk below the ferrule due to chalk. In those cases you usually have to get a slightly smaller ferrule put on. Makes the cue a little bit more pointy, but you might prefer a slightly smaller tip anyway, especially for pool.

I m not sure abt Qshop but you can actually do it as it is really quite simple.
Go a the local DIY shop, find a wood colour(not those white one).
Apply a very tiny amount over the gaps, make sure it covers them.
Clear away the excess n leave it over night.
Get a very very fine sandpaper(for finishing) n go over the spot.
Apply cue wax over the whole shaft to seal over the patchwork.
Cue is now shiny n brand new look. Cue oil can also be applied.

For JP,you can order thru their website but only on their limited models.
For custom made cue, JP have Special,Elite & ulitimate range to choose from.

As for Trevor white, you can either search for his email add(which is widely spread in the entire forum) or you can PM ADR147 to order like many of the singaporean do. But do take note that he will not be taking any order for the rest of the year as he is somewhat behind shedule on his order.

Most effective thing to do is to use very fine wire wool (0000 grade) for cleaning the chalk marks (don't use sanding paper!), then apply raw linseed oil, leave it overnight, wipe the cue with dry cloth. finally, use beeswax (stick), wait 15 minutes or so, wipe it down... and its solved. did it countless times for many cues, always worked. now, just make sure to chalk your cue "correctly" so you avoid this "gaps" at first place. Good luck.

                          Thanks alot for the advises...

Btw willy, you don't seems to be sleeping or you are not in singapore right now?

Would be trying out the methods, time to go shopping around DIY shops....
Saw Home-Fix selling 0000 steel wood at $25 SGD for a big bunch... quite a waste if I just use a little and spending so much for it.

Also, I have a question regarding custom ordering of cues:
Let say I have a off the shelf MasterCue PB4. Tried and tested the feeling of the cue which I like, then i ordered a custom made PB4 with the splice change to a other wood and with a custom name plate and made it to a 1 piece jointless. Will the stiffness of the cue be the same feel if the weight, balance point and everything else is the same?

If its not possible, then how would people be able to get good custom cue order since they will never be able to try it out before the order?

Also, i notice there is significant difference between different types of MasterCue series:
tried 2 Classic cue, they are as stiff as a metal rod, Pro Butt which i own and another of my friend's pro butt is not as stiff, and some off the shelve testing. Does it mean that for Classic, they use a certain grade of Ash Wood while Pro Butt they use other grade?
