  • Types of Finishes

I am confused with the word finishing/finishes

What kinds/types out there? What does it look like (Desrcribe) and what exactly do for you cue?

I know for one there's oil finish and wax too. But I hear terms like "varnish"
what does it exactly mean? needa up my snooker vocabs.
    could use some good teaching

Well ordinary beeswax works well, which I use sometimes on my cue but others could help you more I'm sure.

In fact, the best way is to search the forums and find out that way.

Most oil finish is done with linseed oil, some with tung oil, I think.
Varnish can mean many different things. A very hard oil finish and a lacquar finish can both be called varnish, but they surly feel different.
There are also a large variety of products called antique wood finish or varnish oil or whatever that you can get at your local hardware store.
Kevin Deroo puts some sort of pool cue finish on his snooker butt. How do you call that? It is not an oil finish at all, may be you can also call it varnish. It is not a lacquar. I think it is a kind of polymer or epoxy finish. What about a polyurethane finish? Can you call that varnish?
But I think generally speaking, varnish is referred to that sticky shinny looking finish that one usually finds in cheaper cues.

To this cue, I call it 'lightly' lacquered. We have 'dull' which is just plain wood + bee wax. And 'shinning' which reflects lots of light back to your eyes. Any type is good for me as long as the butt work is good. We don't prefer cue with lots of oil...Why? We live in hot climate, so once the cue is warm, the oil applied will come out and sticks your bridge. We never have too-dry a climate, except those areas up the North mountains (which has no snooker tables after all)
