  • whats so special about jp mannock and burwat champion?

im curious to know whats so special about jp mannock and burwat champion.
especially with the jp mannock. it has the name "anti-grip" and its registered!! how is it anti grip??

how about hunt and obyrne? how come they are "wonderful" too? they look really nice, to be fair.

how come would they cost in today's market?

I believe the jp mannock is so named "antigrip" because they usually had pearwood shafts - which is a very smooth wood so it didnt "grip" through your bridge hand, hence the saying "antigrip". I could be wrong of course, as they also made these cues with maple and ash shafts which sort of goes against my theory ?? Sure someone else will clarify this for you (and me)
As for the Burwat Champion - this was a cue used by the cue God Alex "hurricane" Higgins, and when his cue either got stolen or broken (cant remember which) he made a television appeal for someone to send him a replacment - and hence it became a famous type of cue, and much sort after from then onwards.
Not sure myself why hunt and o'brien are so good, apart from maybe just being a very high quality cue ??

I think the craze of H&O cues in Asia started with Jimmy White. Jimmy White was snooker god in asia.

I believe the anti grip thing has to do with the pearwood shafts used.

Everyone, that is the things I know. Please point out if I got the wrong msg.

As I know,JP Mannock (John Patrick Mannock) is a billiard player who designed this patent cue and sell the patent to Burrough & Watts in around 1905.(So the Mannock's cue taper all are POOL cue taper, not Snooker cue Taper) The first Mannock cue is born in around 1891,and it call "JP Mannock patent cue".Maybe it also a point to made it popular for the story.

Ye Olde Ash also getting popular that it is Steve Davis's cue.
After Steve's original Ye Olde Ash can't play anymore. He ask JohnParris to made a replica and it's the "Ambassador".
"Ambassador" is a fake cue?!! Haha~

Hunt & Obyrne is one of the GOD's cue.It really a the HIGHEST qulity cue in the world.
have been TOUCH around 20pcs+ Obyrne. And it all are great stuff.

I have 2 JP Mannock (Ash & Maple) in my shop.
And the Ash one is very rare on the world.I change it to 55.5" and it same as the 1st JP Mannock patent cue.U can come to try how ANTI GRIP is it.^^

The original taper of the JP Mannock, from what I understand, was designed for masse and the the game of billiard. Only pearwood was used with a horn ferrule. The antigrip claim was largely due to the smoothness of pearwood.

But when it was sold to B & W, they made this model with maple as well as ash.

I think it is so popular because the wood used is very beautifully contrast, and the high splicings make for a very unique look. I personally like the tulip very much.

I am not sure if it is true, but someone told me the original JP mannock (before it was sold to B&W) should have snakewood facing, not burr, is that correct?

Alex Higgins also has played with a JP Mannock, hasn't he?

I think the Ye Olde Ash became so sort after, especially the first edition, because of the age of the ash used, isn't it?

Yes, Alex used a JP Mannock(maple) in 1984 for a few tournaments. In an interview on ITV at the time Alex said - I quote - "...almost a cardinal sin for me to consider using a maple cue but i've got one and i'm playing quite well with it."

I mean I owned or tried around 20pcs+ before.
And it all are in the greatest quality.

I think I only around 350~400pcs Hunt & Obyrne on the world.
And this moment,Hunt & Obyrne market price around 700~800GBP.
But when it was new,it only 550GBP,means Hunt never raise up his price.
20yrs+ still 550GBP for black plate.

Best cues ever made, bar none. The older ones 15 - 20 years are all magnificent. I think they must simply have got a terriffic batch of ash because they are in my opinion second to none.

I have had one for years, bought it second hand in the early nineties, great cue.

They appear from time to time on ebay always go for good money.

oops. i thnk i didnt express myself clearly there. my bad

what i was referring to is the resell value of a black plate hunt and obyrne cue.
you mentioned the early ones were the better ones right?

so lets say 20 yrs ago version black plate hunt and obyrne, what would be resell value be?
