WANTED: Ferrules and joints.

Hi to all,
I am after a supplier of ferrules and joints for snooker/pool cues. I have started to make my own cues, at the moment they are one piece, but i would like to try and make some 2 and 3 piece cues. Can anyone point me int he right direction to where i can buy these in small quantities?

do you make them with hand tools or with a lathe

All my cues are made with hand tools, No lathe! It is easier to get bend out of the timber when you stress relieve it. Everytime you work it a bit you have to leave it to stress relieve itself! It will move alot before you get to the end product.

Thing is with my cues they are made form wood from loacl woods/forrests so i know where my wood comes from as my supplier is a forrestry expert for the National Forrest, in which i live. He supplies me with all manor of woods from good English Oak to English Pine (obviously pine is not what i use for cues!). I get my decorative woods from a craftwood supplier.

What size plane/s do you use?

What splice timber do you find is nicest to work with?

How do you go about weighting a cue?

What do you use to finish your cues?

Well i have 4 main planes, I have a small record palm plane, a Marples No3 &4, then a Record No5 &7. I also have an over the top plane for the first few passes from a blank.

I tend to find if i have a nice piece of light ash, i put something like a nice red rose wood topped back off with the same colour ash to highlight it. On my last cue i put in some nice light red mahogany then some of the same ash on top. My aim at the minute is to get my processes right before trying other things like ebony, rose wood, iroko, tulip wood etc.

I have not yet gone into various woods, but i enjoy working the mahogany, oak and ash, my new cue case i ahve made from local ash has some amazing grain in it, when it is finished i will post pictures.

I finish my cues with linseed oil as i find wax is hard to apply evenly without a lathe.

At the minute i wiegh my cues at the end when i have finished it, then add wieght into the but of the cue by drilling it out and adding some brass or lead. I use my cues for pool and find a small tipped light cue is best for better control, but that is just my opinion.

- cocobola ( so far i havnt used that many)

- i pour lead into a 10mm copper pipe (3.5cm = 1oz) then drill the butt and glue in place

- start off with 180 then 240, 400, 1000 ,2000 oiling along the way between each stage

im also doing everything by hand which is bloody hard work and even the simplest of jobs like drilling the butt can end in disaster will one day get a lathe

just thought i would throw 2p,s worth in its always nice to see how other people go about things as theres always more than one way to skin a cat

Welcome Mark! Nice to see another person giving it a punt! I started off in the same way. Can help you out if you fancy trying a bit of Pippy elm burl if your using local wood?

As you know Luke, been there mate....on the kitchen floor, getting carpet burns on my knuckles from the rug. Luke, forgot to say i can get you some 3000 grit.....great stuff mate.

my first was about 6-7 months ago still banging my head against the wall ..and each new cue brings another problem/hurdle to get over !!!
