  • Help Wanted - Adam Cue

Has anyone got an old Adam cue, two piece with a wooden joint?

I have one I use for pool but the top end is held together by the ferrule and the bottom end is held together with cocktail sticks, which I know sounds ridiculous but sadly its true.

I am trying to learn to copy the thread on the top end with my lathe but I can't get a tap anything like it for a bottom end.

    Again, any help apreciated.

Taps are available for any thread, but if it's not one which is commonly used, you might have to have one made, which is VERY expensive.

Can't you use a more common thread for the tapping, and then cut a match on the shaft spiggot???

That would be the easiest way of sorting it I'd have thought. After all, it wouldn't matter one bit what thread size or pattern it was done to, as long as it offered strength and a clean contact. A coarser thread may be best for timber though if you can manage it.

It's a coarser thread I'm using for the timber hence the difficulty in getting a tap, it was the old wooden joint with the nylon bit at the top, I got a brass bit to replace the nylon and I really like the cue so have tried many times to save it.

I've also changed many times and every tme I go back to it, it's like an old friend and it's as pleased to see me as I am to see it. I'll try to upload some photos if I can.

There's a two piece cenre split of your on ebay right now so I'm thinking of speaking nicely to Santa.

Again, many thanks for the helpful advice.

You can mill the threads on those big fat wood pin, as shown in the attachment.
These type of pin is very common on carom cues.
        Hope this helps.

Poolq, many thanks, that looks a nice setup you have there. I'll need to get a look at more of your photos later on. Have you ever thought of putting a small weight to the tip end of one of those pins?

That kind of wood pin is not very good in my opinion, as they tend to crack or swell over time.
I believe Alan McManus plays with an Adam with that kind fo pin. Dennis Tylar also used that for a while.

Agreed. Alans cue has not been taken apart for many years after he had problems with the joint. I had thought of fitting a brass joint but I reckon the less meddling I do the better although if it comes to it...........
