advice on fitting joint on 3/4 cue.

i have made a couple of 1 piece cues,would now like to make 3/4 jointed cues,is it possible to fit the joints by hand or will i need to get a pro to fit them.

All depends on how steady a hand you have to drill holes. I have only fitted a thread to the butt of my cue so i can use a 6 inch extention..I done this just with a hand drill and a set of calipers to get the centre of my cue butt..it turned out fine...do you have access to a lathe etc ?

no access to lathe,but i have worked with hand tools for 40 yrs,i am a 57 yr old joiner.planning shafts & splicing is fine ,just not sure how joints fit,i have one that is threaded, do you thread the shaft as well?

I think some makers just glue the joint in and others tap it and glue and screw it in.

But I'm not a cuemaker

its possible but once you take the cost of the brass etc you might as well get a pro to do it if there is one near.

I thread both (but I thread everything, ferrule, extension socket...), not sure about others.
I am not sure how you can do it by hand, but I guess it is possible.
But if you can buy a lathe, even a cheap one it would make life much easier for you I am sure.

thank you all for your input., i'll try on some scrap wood and see how i go on, one other question, do you trim the joint to fit the shaft?

Yes i would defo trim the joint to fit the shaft...

I think what he means is the brass would be of a larger diamater to the shaft so in order to make the joint flush with the shaft then he would need to reduce the srapp brass with a lathe....I think this it what he means.

But thats where I got confused, because you would obviously have to do that, so I thought he might have meant tampering with the thread on the joint of something which wouldn't be a good idea.
